우리나라의 무역자유화와 이산화탄소 배출량

국문 초록

국제무역과 관련한 많은 연구들은 무역개방을 통한 교역의 증가가 환경에 미친 영향에 대해서 명확한 입장을 보이지 않았다. 그러나 기후변화와 관련하여 이산화탄소 배출량이 국제적인 이슈로 등장하면서 이를 규명하려는 시도가 점차 증가하고 있다. 우리나라는 무역량의 꾸준한 증가세에 힘입어 높은 성장세를 보이는 가운데 2009년 기준으로 세계에서 8번째로 이산화탄소를 많이 배출하는 국가가 되었다. 본 논문은 우리나라 이산화탄소 배출에 영향을 주는 국내총생산과 1인당 국민총소득을 포함하여 규모효과와 기술효과는 물론 무역개방의 확대가 이산화탄소 배출에 미치는 구성효과에 중점을 두고 분석하였다. 분석결과에 따르면, 두 변수 모두 예상되는 부호를 나타냈지만 통계적으로 유의하지 않은 결과를 보였다. 반면에 무역개방이 증가할수록 이산화탄소 배출량을 감소시키는 긍정적인 역할을 한 것으로 나타났으며 통계적으로도 유의한 결과를 도출하였다. 한편, 1997년 지구온난화 방지를 위한 교토의정서 체결되었지만, 정부의 적극적인 대응책이 최근에 마련되면서 이산화탄소 배출량을 감소시키는데 큰 역할을 하지 못하였다.

영문 초록

The literatures on trade openness are largely uncertain about the environmental consequences of international trade. However, as the relationship between climate change and CO₂ emissions became an international issue, lots of efforts were attempted consecutively to examine its connection. As the mass of trade rapidly increased, Korea became the 8th leading country with the most CO₂ emissions in 2009. The paper explores the empirical question of whether trade openness is harmful or beneficial on CO₂ emissions in Korea. In particular, the paper underscores the impact of trade openness on CO₂ emissions and further investigates the scale effect and technology effect in terms of GDP and gross national income and trade openness respectively. According to the results, it turns out that most of the variables have the expected signs and statistically signifiant influence on CO₂ emissions as well. Especially, contrary to expectations, trade openness plays an important role in reducing the CO₂ emissions in Korea. The paper also shows that the implementation of Kyoto Protocol, as a dummy variable, has a positive sign, which means that this agreement has not had a positive impact on declining CO₂ emissions in Korea since 1997.
