사교육비 지출이 학업성취도에 미치는 영향 연구

국문 초록

우리나라의 사교육은 학업성취도 향상뿐만 아니라 상급학교 진학과 관련하여 다양한 측면의 논의가 진행되고 있는 주제이다. 본 연구는 지속적으로 증가되고 있는 사교육비가 학업성취도 향상에 영향을 주는지에 대한 실증분석을 계량모형을 구축하여 분석하고 경제적, 사회적 시사점을 제시하고자 한다. 이를 위해 사교육비에 따라 효과가 실제 발생하는지에 대한 논의와 함께 사교육비 지출 결정에 영향을 주는 다양한 요인을 파악하고자 한다. 2003년~2008년 기간 동안 사교육비 지출 및 학업성취도 관련 자료를 활용하여 구축된 다중회귀모형 추정결과에 따르면, 학부모 소득과 사교육비는 일정한 양의 관계를 나타내고 있으나, 소득증가에 따라 사교육비가 증가하는 속도는 점차 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 즉 사교육비의 한계소득체감 현상이 있는 것으로 제시되었다. 학교 급별로는 중학교의 경우에는 사교육비가 학업성취도에 미치는 효과가 명확하게 드러나지 않았으나, 고등학교의 경우에는 사교육비가 학업성취도에 미치는 효과가 통계적으로 유의한 양(+)의 영향으로 나타나서 대학입시준비 등 다양한 요인들과 함께 사교육비의 효과가 존재하는 것으로 분석되었다. 지역별로는 중소도시가 대도시에 비하여 사교육비 지출의 효과가 상대적으로 큰 것으로 분석되었다.

영문 초록

This study attempts to explore the effects of private education expenditure on the increase of the academic achievements and to suggest alternative policies of after-schooling. We establish if private education expenditure has a positive effect on the academic achievement by using students’ test scores and private education expenditure during the years 2003 to 2008. We find that private education expenditure increases as parents’ income grows. The marginal propensity of private education expenditure has decreased as income grows. For middle school, private education expenditure has a negative impact on the academic achievements of the students with little statistical significance. For high school, private education expenditure has a significant positive relation, reflecting the fact that high school students prepare the college entrance examination. In the analysis of city size effects, private education expenditure shows a significant positive sign to the academic achievements of the students in both large and small & medium size cities. Moreover the effects are stronger in small & medium size city than large city.
