패널 다이어리 자료를 이용한 인터넷 이용의 TV 시청 대체에 대한 실증 분석

국문 초록

본 논문은 스마트 기기와 무선 광대역 인터넷을 중심으로 인터넷과 TV의 미디어 속성들이 급속히 변화하는 정보기술 환경 속에서, 새로운 미디어인 인터넷의 이용이 전통적 미디어인 TV의 시청에 어떠한 영향을 주는지를 정량적으로 분석하고 있다. 미디어 이용 시간에 대한 다이어리(diary) 원시 자료를 바탕으로 2010년-2012년 기간에 걸친 대규모 패널 자료를 구축하여 분석에 이용함으로써 미디어 별 이용 시간 측정에 있어서 신뢰성을 확보하고자 하였다. 또한 고정효과 패널모형에 대한 추정을 통해 통상적인 횡단면 자료 분석에서는 제대로 다루어지기 힘든 개별 이용자들의 시간 불변 특성들의 영향을 효과적 통제를 함으로써, 인터넷 이용의 TV시청에 대한 영향을 보다 엄밀히 추정하고자 하였다. 추정 결과 무엇보다도 인터넷 이용 시간의 증가는 TV시청 시간을 통계적으로 강건하고 유의미하게 감소시키는 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 추가적 분석을 통해 인터넷 이용 시간의 증가는 인터넷 이용 시간을 제외한 전체 미디어 및 콘텐츠 이용 시간 중 TV 시청 시간이 차지하는 비중을 오히려 증가시키고 있으며, 인터넷 이용 시간을 포함한 전체 미디어 및 콘텐츠 이용 시간 역시 증가시키는 것으로 나타나고 있다. 즉 인터넷 이용이 전체 미디어 및 콘텐츠 이용 시간을 증가시키는 가운데, TV 시청보다는 다른 미디어 및 콘텐츠 이용 시간을 더 큰 비중으로 대체하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

This paper analyses the effects of Internet use on TV viewing under rapidly changing media circumstances where smart devices and mobile broadband Internet reposition media attributes of both Internet and TV. For this purpose, a large panel dataset for the period 2010-2012 is constructed using raw data of media use diary. Unlike the conventional analysis of cross-section data on this subject, analyzing panel data make it easy to control unobservable time invariant characteristics of individual media users. Furthermore, the data from media use diary is generally more reliable than the survey data based on interviewee’s recollection. Fixed effects models that control time-invariant characteristics of media users by fixed effects terms are applied to this panel dataset. The estimation results show that the increase of the Internet use has a robust negative effect on the TV viewing. This represents the substituting relation between the Internet and TV media. Additional estimations show, however, that the increase of the Internet use raise the ratio of TV viewing time in the total media use time excluding Internet use and also raise the total media use time including Internet use. This implies that Internet substitute media other than TV more than TV itself while it increases total media use time.
