유딧기에 나타난 신앙-윤리적 문제에 대한 성서신학적 고찰

국문 초록

19세기 경에 들어서면서, 성경 시대의 역사를 연구하고 성경에 엄격한 본문비평 방법론을 적용하던 학자들은 유딧기 내용의 역사성에 본격적으로 이의를 제기하기 시작했고, 거짓말과 성적 유혹과 살인 등 유딧의 일련의 행위들에서 발견되는 부도덕성과 비윤리성을 문제 삼기 시작하였다: ‘유딧은 이스라엘 백성으로서 지켜야 할 윤리-도덕 규율을 어긴 죄인인가?’ 혹은 ‘유딧은 더 큰 신앙적 가치를 위해 율법을 어긴 것인가?’ 특히 그리스도교 학자들은 원수를 사랑하라는 예수 그리스도의 가르침(마태 5,43-48; 루카 6,27-28.32-36)에 정면으로 위배되는 듯한 유딧의 행위들의 정당성을 문제 삼기도 했다. 그러나 20세기 후반에 들어 제2경전과 외경에 대한 주해학자들의 관심이 높아지면서 유딧기에 관한 연구도 활발해졌고, 성경 전승과 고대 근동과 그리스의 사상, 문화, 문학 등에 대한 연구를 통해 저자가 살던 당대의 가치관에 대해 이해하기 시작하면서, 차차 유딧의 행위들의 비도덕성에 대한 기존의 부정적 이해 또한 달라졌다. 본고는 유딧이 유다 민족을 아시리아의 위협에서 구하기 위해 많은 이방인들을 속여 기만하고, 적장 홀로페르네스를 성적 매력으로 미혹시키며, 잠들어 저항하지 못하는 그의 목을 벤 일련의 사건들을 구약 성경의 윤리-도덕적 측면과 고대 근동의 문화적 배경 하에서 조명하고, 그녀의 행위의 정당성에 대해 논한다. 사실 구약 성경 전승과 근동의 문화라는 배경에서 볼 때, 유딧의 행위는 유딧기의 저자와 독자 당대의 신앙인들에게 ‘도덕적으로 정당한 것’이었다. 유딧의 속임수와 성적 유혹과 살인 행위는 하느님과 이스라엘 백성의 명예와 실존을 위협하는 이방인 압제자들을 향한 것이었기에, 이민족들의 위협과 회유에도 굴하지 않는 신앙의 충실성 관점에서든, 명예의 실추와 회복에 관한 고대 근동과 그리스인들의 문화적 관점에서든, 정당한 목적을 위한 타당한 수단/전략으로 이해될 수 있다.

영문 초록

Around the 19th century, the scholars who studied the history of the biblical era and applied strict textual criticism methodology to the Bible began to object seriously to the historicity of the content of the Book of Judith, questioning the immorality and the unethicality found in a series of acts of Judith, such as lies, sexual seduction and murder: ‘Is Judith a sinner who violated the ethical-moral discipline to follow as an Israelite?’ or ‘did Judith break the law for greater religious value?’ In particular, christian scholars have also questioned the legitimacy of the Judith’s acts, which seemed to be in direct contradiction to the teachings of Jesus Christ to love the enemy(Matt 5,43-48; Luke 6,27-28.32-36). However, in the second half of the 20th century, as the interest of commentators on the deuterocanonical books and apocrypha increased, studies on the Book of Judith became active. And, beginning to understand the values o f era of the author - with the study of biblical traditions, and ideas, culture and literature of the ancient Near East and Greece -, the existing negative understanding of the immorality of Judith’s acts also changed. This article, considering the ethical-moral aspect of the Old Testament and the cultural background of the Near East, describes a series of events in which Judith deceived many gentiles, seduced the general Holofernes with sexual attraction and cut off the neck of the enemy, sleeping and unable to resist, in order to save the Judean people from the threat of Assyria, and discusses the legitimacy of her acts. In fact, in view of the tradition of the Old Testament and the culture of the Near East, Judith’s acts were ‘morally justified’ for the author and believers of his day. Judith’s deception, sexual seduction and murder were directed against gentile oppressors who threatened the honor and existence of God and the Israelites, so her acts can be understood as a valid means/strategy for just purposes, from the perspective of fidelity of the faith, which is undaunted by the threat and appeasement of the gentile oppressors, and from the cultural perspectives of the ancient Near East and Greece on the loss and the recovery of honor.
