국문 초록

탈식민화의 환경 속에서 중국 당대 예술의 발전은 서양 주류 예술 문화의 영향으로 자신들의 문화적 정체성이 결여되어 왔다. 1980년대부터 중국 설치미술의 발전을 보면 중국 전통문화의 요소를 활용하여 디자인하는 현상을 볼 수 있다. 본 논문은 중국 전통문화 요소를 활용한 중국 설치미술 창작에 대한 연구를 통해 중국 예술가들이 어떻게 현시대 전통문화 요소를 재활성화하고 자신의 영향력을 형성할 수 있는지 탐구할 것이다. 본 논문은 우선 중국 설치미술의 발전 과정과 특징을 분석하여 전통문화 요소의 활용은 중국문화의 환경에 근거함과 동시에 중국의 국제적 정체성을 확립하기 위한 전파적 책략임을 지적하였다. 이어 본 논문은 중국 설치미술 창작에서 흔히 보는 5대 장르의 전통문화 요소를 정리하고 또한 그들의 창작방식을 분석하였다. 마지막으로 5대 요소와 두 가지 활용방식을 분석틀로 하여 중국 설치미술에 있어서 대표적인 5명의 예술가들의 작품을 분석하였다. 이 작품들은 사회 문제를 독특한 관념과 자국 민중이 쉽게 받아들이는 방식으로 표현하면서 전통적 원소의 형식 전환과 가치의 재건을 동시에 이뤄냈다. 본 논문은 예술 발전의 글로벌화에 따라 어떻게 토종 전통문화 자원을 발굴하여 당대의 사회적 문제를 표현하느냐가 각국의 예술 발전에서 마주할 수 있는 보편적인 문제라고 믿고 있다. 중국 설치미술에 있어서 전통문화 요소의 활용은 세계 현대 예술의 중요한 주제(관심사)를 탐구하는 정체성에 대해 새로운 사고의 시각을 제공한다.

영문 초록

In a post-colonial context, contemporary art in China had once been following suit of the mainstream Western art culture, lacking its own cultural identity. Since the 1980s, a distinctive feature of the development of Chinese installation art is drawing nourishment from traditional Chinese culture. By examining the use of traditional cultural elements in the creation of Chinese installation art, this article explores how Chinese artists rejuvenate traditional cultural elements and construct their identity discourse in contemporary contexts. The article first reviews the process and features of the development of Chinese installation art and points out that the application of traditional cultural elements is based on the Chinese cultural context and at the same time a communication strategy to establish China s international identity. Subsequently, we sort out five major categories of traditional cultural elements commonly seen in Chinese installation art, and two modes of their application. Using these five elements and the two modes of application as the analysing framework, representative works of Chinese installation art are analyzed. These works reflect social issues in their unique conceptions and in a way that is acceptable to the Chinese audience, while at the same time achieve a conversion of forms of traditional elements and a reconstruction of values. This article believes that with the globalization of artistic development, the question of how to tap local traditional cultural resources to convey social issues is a problem encountered by many countries. And the use of traditional cultural elements in Chinese installation art offers a new perspective on the identity exploration inquired by important themes in contemporary art around the world.
