중국 초기 산수화와 병풍 구조 관계 연구

국문 초록

중국 회화사에서 산수화는 현전하는 유물의 부족으로 그 발생과 초기 발전 과정이 여전히 미지의 영역으로 남아있다. 문헌을 바탕으로 한 기존 연구는 산수화가 왜 탄생했으며 어떠한 전개과정을 거쳐 우리가 널리 인식하고 있는 산수화의 형식을 갖추게 되었는지를 충분히 설명하지 못한다. 본 논문은 기존 연구와 달리 최근 고고학적 발굴로 드러난 위진남북조 시대부터 북송, 금대까지의 고분 벽화 속 산수화 이미지를 통하여 초기 산수화 발달의 면모를 조망하고자 한다. 고분 벽화에는 특정 시대 산수화의 유행 양식뿐 아니라 ‘공간’ 내에서 산수화가 감상되고 활용되는 방식까지 보이는데, 특히 초기 산수화가 대부분 병풍에 그려져 있다는 사실에 주목하여 그 의미가 무엇인지 살펴본다. 본 논문에서는 우선 남북조 시대부터 북송과 금에 이르기까지 고분 벽화에 등장하는 산수화를 중심으로 그 양식과 형태 변화의 흐름을 파악한다. 그 다음 산수화의 그림틀에 해당하는 병풍의 형태 즉 굴절병, 장자, 삽병 별로 산수화의 구도와 양식이 어떻게 다른지 살핀다. 이를 통해 산수화의 구도와 양식이 병풍의 형태와 밀접한 관련이 있으며 초기 산수화의 전개는 병풍의 구조로부터 영향을 받았다는 결론을 도출한다. 이로써 지금까지 산수화 연구에서 중심이 되어왔던 형식적 측면들이나 화론, 화가, 후원자 등의 키워드로부터 벗어나 산수화라는 시각물이 감상되고 사용되는 방식을 고찰하여, 그 탄생과 발달의 새로운 면모를 밝힐 수 있다.

영문 초록

The birth and early history of Chinese landscape painting has remained largely unknown due to a lack of extant examples. Accordingly, previous research based on literature study has not been fully able to explain how the typical composition and format as screen painting were established. This paper attempts to fill this gap by incorporating the various images depicted on tomb murals as a proxy to the missing visual material. Highlighting the images of landscape painting of tomb murals from the Six Dynasties(220-589) to the Song-Jin period(960-1234), this paper reexamines the early development of landscape painting in China. First, this paper traces the changes of landscape painting images in tomb murals by period. Then, it classifies the images by the three formats of the screen: multi-panel freestanding screen, single-panel wall-mount screen, and single-panel screen on stand, and analyzes the painting styles of each format. Lastly, based on an observation of how the screen format reflects the ways in which landscape paintings were appreciated and used, this paper argues that the methods of displaying landscape painting are closely related to the early development of the form.
