색상환 회상 과제의 반응 자료에 대한 혼합 모형 분석 절차의 이해

국문 초록

본 연구는 최근 시각작업기억의 표상 특성을 연구하기 위한 색상환 회상 과제의 반응 자료 특성을 기술하고, 이에 대한 혼합 모형 분석 절차의 적용에 있어서 유념할 점을 강조하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 시각작업기억에 대한 두 가지 대표적인 표상 특성 가설을 소개하였으며, 이 두 가설들에 대한 검증에 사용되는 수리 분석 절차인 혼합 모형 분석의 이론적 특성을 기술하였다. 다음으로 혼합 모형 분석 절차에 대한 상세한 소개를 위해, 색상환 회상 과제의 일반적 참가자 특성을 반영한 가상의 시뮬레이션 자료 세트를 다수 생성하고 이 자료를 토대로 회상 시행수와 정확도의 변화가 회상 수행의 변산성에 초래하는 영향력을 가늠하였다. 그 결과 회상 시행수와 정확도 양측의 감소는 일정 시점을 기준으로 회상 수행의 변산성을 현격하게 증가시키는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 시각작업기억의 표상 특성 연구를 위해 색상환 회상 과제를 사용할 경우, 개별 처치 조건에서 반복 측정되는 회상 시행의 개수와 개별 참가자의 평균 회상 정확도를 고려하는 것이 관련 연구들 간 일관된 실험 결과의 도출을 위해 매우 중요할 수 있음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

The present study characterized properties of response data derived from a color-wheel recall task that is used for examining properties of visual working memory (VWM) representations, and emphasized several considerations to be kept in mind when applying a procedure of mixed-model analysis. In order to address the considerations, the study introduced two major hypothesis of VWM representations, and described characteristics of the mixed-model analysis that are mathematically applied when testing the hypotheses. To specifically introduce the detailed procedure of mixed-model analysis, a set of simulation data was generated based on general characteristics of participants in color-wheel recall tasks, and influence of changes in trial numbers and recall accuracies on variability of recall responses was assessed. The results of assessment showed that a decrease of the trial numbers and recall accuracies together led to a substantial increase in the variability of the recall responses. The results indicate that considering both the numbers of trials in each experimental condition and the average recall accuracies of each participant would be important to derive a consistent pattern of results among studies where one uses a color-wheel recall task to examine the properties of VWM representations.
