국문 초록

본 연구는 비판적 문화감수성을 함양하고 통합적 사고역량을 제고할 수 있는 교양심화수업으로 현대문화속 멜로드라마 코드 읽기’ 수업을 제시한다. 멜로드라마는 단지 어떤 작품이나 하급문화의 특성을 지칭하는 것이 아니라 근현대 대중문화를 다매체적으로 관통해 온 대표적 특성중 하나이며, 현재 한국사회와 문화를 압도적으로 지배하는 감정구조이다. 이 글에서 제시하는 수업모델을 통해 필자는 근현대의 다양한 소설, 희곡과 연극, 영화와 뮤지컬 작품, TV드라마를 관통하는 멜로드라마적 특성을 멀티미디어 자료로 이해감상하고, 그것이 어떤 식으로 현재의 감수성을 지배하고 있는지 읽어내는 과정을 학제적으로 시도하고자 한다. 구체적으로는 소설양식이 그 발흥에서부터 멜로드라마와 뗄 수 없는 관계를 맺고 있었음을 초기소설 <클래리사>를 통해 살펴본 후 관련비평을 같이 읽고, 그 흐름이 서구의 뮤지컬과 무성영화시대를 거쳐 20세기 중반의 미국드라마와 헐리웃 영화를 넘어 현대의 대표적인 문화양식으로 이어지고 있음을 여러 작품들을 같이 읽고 보며 탐구할 것이다. 수업 후반부에서는 멜로드라마의 부정형성(不定形性)과 엄청난 잠재력이 21세기 한국사회에 와서도 끊임없이 재생산되고 유통되는 상황을 일별함으로써, 근현대 대중문화에 대한 비판적 이해를 높이게 될 것이다. 심화수업과 토론에 익숙지 않은 상태에서 시작한 학습자들은 본 수업을 통하여 각종 텍스트를 읽어내는 방식에 쉽게 접근하고, 멜로드라마가 문화/사회/정치 현상을 이해하는 중요한 감수성임을 깨닫게 됨으로서 공감과 비판의 리터러시를 갖추게 될 것이다. 본고에서는 구체적 작품감상에서 시작하여 자아와 주변세상에 대한 인식과 그 변화가능성을 추구하는 수업모델을 통하여, 현재의 교양교육을 확장하는 한 방식을 제시하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study aims at reviewing present General Education programs in Korean universities and proposing a curricular model of “Melodramatic Code in Contemporary Culture”(MCCC) to improve critical cultural awareness and realize liberal education. The melodrama-ness is one of the most representative characteristics in modern mass culture through media, but it is still regarded as a “low culture” in a pejorative sense. An MCCC model is supposed to work through various literary/non literary works such as novels, plays, movies and musicals and help students to better understand modern culture and its structure of feeling in interdisciplinary and multimedia class. In this class, students will review Clarissa and critical articles. They will also study the outstanding current of melodrama-ness in the stream of Western musicals, silent movies, American drama and Hollywood movies in the 20th Century. The Mephistophelean power and potential of melodrama is vividly outstanding in 21st Century Korean society, reproducing and circulating itself. Students will participate actively in class with familiar works, thus improving more critical but sympathetic literacy through the class. This class is easily accessible to students because class materials are more familiar to them and make them more interested in the class and communicate about the works and world around them. An MCCC model can work well even for less communicatively-competent students to raise their awareness of the texts and its contexts, thus helping them develop higher level of cultural literacy with criticism and sympathy. This curricular model could be a meaningful examination of current liberal education in Korea.
