조선시대 창원지역 과거합격자 고찰

국문 초록

본 논문은 조선시대 양반의 신분유지와 향상에 있어 중요한 매개체였던 科擧를 통해 창원지역 在地士族의 실태를 살펴본 것이다. 조선시대 창원지역에서는 생원·진사시 32명, 문과 12명이 배출되었다. 전체 합격자와 비교해 보면 생원·진사시는 0.04~0.08%, 문과는 0.03~0.07%에 해당되는 매우 낮은 수치이다. 이는 지역 내에서 합격자가 매우 희소성을 지닌 집단인 동시에 과거합격이 개인과 가문, 나아가 고을 차원에서도 큰 영예였음을 보여준다. 창원지역에서 과거합격자를 많이 배출한 가문으로는 창녕조씨·남평문씨·김해김씨 불비파·김해김씨 이형파·창녕장씨 등이 확인된다. 이 가문들은 과거합격을 매개로 창원지역 내 가문의 격을 일신시키며, 鄕案 입록 등을 통하여 향촌사회를 주도해 갔다. 합격 시기는 대부분 15·16세기에 집중되어 있다. 하지만 16세기 중반을 전후하여 지역의 주요가문들의 이거, 현달한 인물의 부족과 인조반정 이후 중앙정치의 변동 등에 영향을 받아 17세기부터 과거 합격자 수가 급격히 줄어든다. 이로 인해 합격자를 배출한 가문과 그렇지 못한 가문 간의 격차는 점차 좁혀져 갔으며, 창원지역재지사족은 사회적 지위 유지를 위해 여러 문중 활동에 전념하게 된다.

영문 초록

This thesis takes a look at the status of the Jaejisajok (retired noble class or renowned local class) in the Changwon Area through the state examination, an important way of sustaining and improving the status of noble class during the Joseon Era. During the Joseon Era, the Changwon Area produced 32 persons who passed classics and literary licentiate examination and 12 persons who passed civil service examination. When comparing to the overall people who passed such examinations, the classics and literary licentiate examination showed extremely low rate of 0.04~0.08% while the civil service examination had 0.03~0.07%, but this fact displayed that those people who passed such examinations within the region were a group of extreme rarity as well as a great honor for the individual, family and the applicable region. For the renowned families that produced many people passed the state examination from the Changwon Area, there are Changnyeong Cho family, Nampyeong Moon family, Bulbipa of Gimhae Kim family, Ihyeongpa of Gimhae Kim, Changnyeong Jang and so forth. These families enhanced the class of respective family in the Changwon Area with the success in the state examination as the steppingstone and they led the Hyangchon (local community) through local planning, list for government position and others. However, the periods of passing the examinations are concentrated mostly in the 15·16th century, and around the mid-16th century, main families in respective region showed the phenomenon to transit to different regions on the basis of marriage and residency. As a result, The Jaejisajok forces in the Changwon Area gradually declined and the number of people who passed the state examination drastically declined from the 17th century.
