영문 초록

The research on the translation of 「Madame Roland s Biography」 is generally limited on the study of the novel s plot or its significance and influence. However, there is few research on how the translation itself was conducted, not to mention even those researches in this aspect are only appeared as some forms of brief introduction among the researches of ‘patriotic enlightenment novels or ‘translation literature during the opening and awakening period’. Furthermore, novel translation in this period is generally done through indirect translation. However, few scholars have defined indirect translation and therefore it often leads to contradictions in research. Starting with discussing the current existed shortcomings of this kind of research, this article has studied Madame Roland’s Biography based on three types of indirect translation. This study also reveals that 「Madame Roland s Biography」 is not a simple indirect translation work, but actually a multiple indirect translation work, therefore needs to be treated appropriately by keeping this in mind. Besides, through demonstrating some examples of mistranslation caused by indirect translation, this research has provided some suggestions to Chinese-Korean translations to avoid this type of mistranslation.
