사찰 민간의료의 전승유형과 의료민속학적 함의: 전승 스님과 치료 경험자의 사례를 중심으로

국문 초록

사찰 민간의료는 불가의 스님들에 의해 전승되어온 양생과 치병을 위한 관련 지식과 기술 및 사유와 언설, 실천의 총체를 의미한다. 주요 내용으로는 참선과 행선, 요가, 기도, 구병시식 의례를 비롯하여 침구, 부항, 사혈, 약물, 지압, 마사지, 약손, 따주기, 음식, 격타 등 다양하다. 사찰 민간의료 전승유형은 산중, 속가, 학교 등의 전승 경로에 따라 크게 5가지로 나뉜다. 제1유형은 사찰의 생활실천 속에서 스님들 간에 대대로 전승되어온 ‘산중 구전’ 유형이다. 제2유형은 스님이 출가 전 의료업에 종사했던 선대로부터 해당 의료를 전승해온 ‘속가 가전’ 유형이다. 제3유형은 산중 스님으로부터 전승받은 의술을 바탕으로 속가 전문인의 것까지 종합하여 체계화시킨 유형이다. 제4유형은 산중의술과 학교의 공식적인 교육과정을 함께 전승한 유형이다. 제5유형은 산중과 속가, 학교 교육과정 등을 통해 복합적으로 전승한 유형이다. 사찰 민간의료는 일차적으로는 수행 중 생기는 질병 치유를 비롯한 승려 개개인의 건강을 도모함으로써 사찰공동체 유지와 재생산의 필요에 의해 전승되어 왔다. 일부는 중생들의 병고액난을 덜어주려는 보리심의 발로에서 자연적으로 일반인에게로 실천되어 나갔다. 신도와의 소통 확대, 포교 및 이에 부수되는 효과로서 사찰 재정 확충 외에 수행의 방편으로서도 사찰의 민간의료 수요가 발생한다. 의료 발달로 사찰 민간의료 대부분이 자연 사멸되어가는 시절에서 명맥을 잇기 위한 몇몇 스님들의 노력은 무형문화의 전승과 의료생활사의 이해 측면에서 의의가 크다.

영문 초록

The folk medicine in temple is a totality of concerning knowledges, skills, ideas, discourses and practices for a care of health and healing, handed down by monks in temples. It contains various remedies, meditation in S?n[Zen] Buddhism[參禪], practices in S?n[Zen] meditation of going[行禪], yoga, prayer, Buddhism ritual for healing, acupuncture and moxibustion, Buwhang, bloodletting, herb medicinal therapy, a finger-pressure therapy, massage, a soothing touch of the bed, drawing blood on the thumb, food therapy, blow therapy etc. The folk medicine in temple have five transmission patterns from a few of learning courses, temple, popular home, formal education etc. Th first is ‘oral transmission in a temple’, handed down by monks through everyday lives. The second is ‘popular home transmission’ from a forebear engaged in medical service. The Third is ‘temple-popular expert transmission’ which a monk made the one from his teacher monk in temple addition to the one from popular expert. The fourth is ‘temple-formal education transmission’ which a monk added the one from his teacher monk in temple to the formal education. Finally, the fifth is ‘temple-popular expert-formal education transmission’ which a monk added the one from his teacher monk in temple to popular expert and the formal education. First of all, the folk medicine in temple have been handed down for maintenance and continuance of temple community by a care of health and healing of monk individuals. At the same time, it have been naturally expended to the popular by manifestation of the aspiration for Buddhahood, reducing the pain of sickness. It functions for not only the smoothness of interaction with a believers, missionary work and the expansion of temple finances as following effect but also for the way of religious training. It functions for preservation and transmission of intangible culture heritage and for position of a history of everyday medicinal lives.
