한국인들에게 ‘신미양요’로 알려져 있는 조선과 미국 간의 1871년 군사교전은 양쪽 나라에서 그다지 잘 알려져 있지 않다. 그 당시 충돌과정에서 사용된 대다수의 무기류도 역시 잘 알려져 있지 않다. 공적이고 사적인 많은 역사적인 문서들을 조사함으로써, 본 연구는 비교·역사적인 관점에서 신미양요 당시에 사용된 화약무기류를 분석하였다. 먼저 동서양의 화약무기를 살펴보고 그것들이 어떻게 개발되고 사용되었는지 알아본 다음, 양측의 화약무기 기술과 개발에 대한 과정과 차이를 살펴보았다. 훗날 조선의 화약무기 개발과 생산에 기반이 되었기 때문에, 조선의 초기 청동과 철 대포의 개발에 관한 내용에도 특별한 관심을 쏟았다. 16세기 말, 일본에 의한 조선의 화승총 머스킷의 도입은 조선군 역사에서의 전환점이 되어, 그 역시 일본과의 7년 전쟁인 임진왜란 이후 수십 년간 화승총 기술의 발전과 함께 이 연구의 주된 대상이다. 그리고 이 연구에서 신미양요 당시 미군들이 사용했던 화약무기류를 조사해보았고, 그 반대편인 조선군들이 사용했던 무기류들과도 비교하였다. 양측에서 사용된 화약 무기류의 본질적인 강점과 약점에 대한 논의도 다루었다. 본 연구에서는 신미양요에서의 전투가 조선의 미래 무기에 끼친 영향도 다루었는데, 이후 조선의 국력약화와 서양 및 그들의 군대에 대한 점차적인 개국, 일본식민지 기간의 무기개발 억제, 제2차 세계대전 이후의 한국 화약무기의 재등장, 그리고 마지막으로 현재 최신 군대 화약무기 기술을 주도하는 한국의 역할까지 살펴보았다.

영문 초록

The 1871 military action between Korea and the United States, known by Koreans as the Shinmiyangyo, is not very well known in either country. Many of the weapons used in that conflict are also not well known. By examining many historical documents, both official and private, this study analyzes firearms used in the Shinmiyangyo from a comparative, historical perspective. It first looks at firearms in both the East and West and how they were developed and used, and then looks at the progression and divergence of firearms technology and development in both hemispheres. Special attention is given to early Korean bronze and iron cannon development, as it was the foundation for future Korean firearms development and production. As the Japanese introduction of the matchlock musket to Korea at the end of the 16th century was a turning point in Korean military history, it is also focused on in this paper, along with advances Korea made with matchlock technology in the decades following its seven-year war with Japan. The study then examines firearms used by American forces in the Shinmiyangyo and compares them with the weapons used by the opposing Korean forces. A discussion is made on the inherent strengths and weaknesses of the black powder weapons used by both sides. It covers the repercussions the battle had on the future of firearms in Korea, by looking at Korea’s vulnerability in the years following, the eventual opening of the country to Western countries and their military forces, the repression of development during the Japanese colonial times, the re-emergence of Korean firearms development following World War Two, and, finally, the country’s current role in leading edge military firearms technology.
