寒山詩의 주요 이미지에 관한 고찰

국문 초록

‘寒山’ 혹은 ‘寒山子’라고 알려진 인물의 詩集인 寒山詩에는 유가와 도가의 경향도 일부나타나지만, 전체를 불교적 색채가 지배하고 있다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 본고에서는 한산이 시를 창작하기 위해 사용한 이미지를 긍정과 부정의 두 가지 방향에서 살펴보았다. 그의 시에서 긍정적 이미지로 사용된 대표적인 예는 ‘흰 구름[白雲]’과 ‘한산[寒山]’이다. ‘흰구름’에는 첩첩 산중에 홀로 은거하며 거친 자연의 변화 속에서 화자의 벗이 됨과 동시에 세상을 자유로이 살아가고자 시인의 내면세계가 투영되어 있다. ‘한산[寒山]’은 시인이 은거하며 생활하던 장소로서의 한산과 인간으로서의 한산이라는 두 가지 의미로 사용되었다. 시인이 이상향을 위해 정진하던 때의 한산이라는 배경은 고난과 역경의 도량으로 나타나지만, 깨달음에 도달하고 난 이후 한산이라는 배경은 이상적이고 청정한 아름다운 도량의 긍정적 이미지로 다가왔다. 부정적 이미지로 사용된 대표적인 예는 ‘動物’과 ‘酒肉’이다. 동물 중에서는 특히 ‘돼지’와 ‘개’의 이미지가 부정의 이미지로 동원되었다. 돼지는 탐욕과 거짓의 이미지, 개는 성냄과 애욕의 이미지로 사용되었다. 술은 일시적인 쾌락을 위한 인간의 부정적인 욕망의 이미지, 고기는 탐욕스런 인간의 이미지로 사용되었다. 이상의 연구를 통해서 인간 한산의 수양을 통한 변화하는 이미지를 살펴볼 수 있었으며, 그 이미지는 한산의 시를 입체적 공간으로서의 의미가 확장되어 시적 의미를 보다 구체화 시켜주는데 일조를 하였음을 알 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This study examines key images contained in ‘Hansan Poems,’ a book of poetry written by a poet named Hansan during Tang Dynasty. Due to the influence of the time, Tang Dynasty, the poet Hansan displayed some tendencies of Confucianism and Taoism within his poems. But in overall, his works were heavily under the influence of Buddhism. This study intends to examine creative images of his works based on two different directions: positiveness and negativeness. First, a number of positive images were unveiled. The most notable images from them are ‘white cloud’ and ‘Hansan’. ‘White cloud’ was a friend to the poet who retreated deep into the mountains and lived alone. At the same time, the inner world of the poet who wanted to lead a free life may be projected through white clouds. ‘Hansan’ was a place of trials and hardships that the poet had to endure while pursuing Taoism. But after enlightenment was attained, ‘Hansan’ emerged with positive images which are ideal yet beautiful and pure generosity. On the other hand, various negative images also made their presence in his poems. Most conspicuous images were ‘animals’ and ‘wine and meat’. From animals, images of ‘pig’ and ‘dog’ were employed in a negative way. ‘Pigs’ offer images of greed and lie while ‘dogs’ render images of anger and ‘love and lust’. Wine represent an image of negative desire for human pleasure, and meat was used as an image of avaricious human being. Based on these findings, his poetic messages were further materialized, which helped appreciating his poems from diverse perspectives.
