국문 초록

雲養金允植(1835~1922)은 구한말의 정치가이자 외교가이며, 한문학 시대의 마지막 정통 문장가 중의한 사람이다. 김윤식이 활약하던 시대의 조선은 신미양요나 병인양요를 비롯해 을사늑약에 이르기까지 조선의 존폐에 직접적 영향을 준 역사적 사건이 연이어 일어난 시기였고, 주변의 강대국들 사이에서 자주적인 조선의 위상을 찾기 위해 끊임없이 노력해야했던 시대였다. 따라서 이전의 어느 시대보다 전환과 변혁의 폭이 극심한 격변의 시대였다고 할 수 있다. 이때, 김윤식은 정치 개혁의 시무에 핵심적 역할을 했으며, 문장가로서 문학 활동을 활발히 하여 이론과 실제 양면에서 높이 평가받았다. 김윤식의 문집인 雲養集에는 450 여 편의 산문 작품이 실려 있다. 그는 인용과 예시, 문답, 대화, 억양, 비교, 대우, 점층 등 다양한 표현기법을 시도하여 자신의 논지를 확고히 하거나, 문장 내에서의 변화를 추구하는데 활용하고 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 김윤식의 산문작품을 분석하여 그의 산문작품에 나타난 표현기법의 특징을 도출하여 네 가지로 정리하였다. 첫째 김윤식은 인용과 예시의 수사를 통해 자신의 논리에대한 타당한 근거로 삼고자 하였다. 이는 자신의 논리에 신뢰성과 타당성을 부여하거나, 주제를 좀 더 선명하게 부각시키기 위해서, 복잡하고 길게 서술해야 할 내용과 표현을 짧은 문장으로 압축하여 표현하였다. 이러한 문장 기술 방법은 독자를 쉽게 이해시키기 위한 방편으로 압축과 상징의 효과를 적용하는 문장서술 의도로 보인다. 따라서 이러한 수사법은 문장에 무게감을 주고 내용을 풍부하게 해주며 다양한 변화를 통해 자신의 이론을 객관적으로 증명할 수 있게 해주었다. 둘째 자신의 논의를 설득시키는 방법으로 문답법을 자주 사용하였다. 문답법의 사용에있어 다른 작가들은 묻는 자와 대답하는 자를 정해놓고 같은 규칙에 따라 묻고 대답한 반면, 김윤식은 자문자답의 형식으로 시작하여 타문자답으로 변화를 줌으로써 독자로 하여금 작자의 의론에 기대감을 갖게도 하고, 자신을 제 삼자화하여 자신의 논의에 객관성을 유지하면서 독자를 논리적으로 설득하기도 하였다. 셋째 抑揚을 반복적으로 사용하여 문장의 기세나 문장의 흐름에 갑작스러운 변화를 줌으로써 독자로 하여금 긴장의 끈을 늦출 수 없게 만들었다. 그리고 의미나 색의 대구를 효과적으로 구사하여 문장의 기세를 한층 강하게 만들고 있다. 넷째 對偶句를 자주 사용한 점은 자유로운 형식으로 인한 단조로움을 피하기 위해 산문에 규율을 적용시켜 문단의 변화를 꾀하고, 아름다운 리듬감을 가미하여 산문에서의가 독성을 높이는데 일조하기도 하였다. 이처럼 김윤식은 자신이 말하고자하는 바를 독자들에게 잘 전달하기 위해 다양한 수사법을 적용하여 변화를 꾀하고 산문의 완성된 수사미를 도모하는 산문 창작 기법을 구사하고 있다.

영문 초록

Kim Yun-sik (1835-1922), whose pen name was Unyang, was a politician and diplomat serving in the late years of the Korean Empire, and one of the last generation of philologists and writers in the era of Sino-Korean literature. The part of the Joseon period when Kim Yun-sik was active was a time when there occurred a series of historical incidents that directly influenced the survival of the Joseon dynasty, from Shinmiyangyo ( Western Disturbance in the Shinmi (1871) Year ) or the United States Expedition to Korea and Byeonginyangyo ( Western disturbance of the Byeongin (1866) year ) or the French campaign against Korea to Eulsa Unwilling Treaty (The Japan–Korea Treaty of 1905). It was also a time when Joseon struggled endlessly to regain its status as an independent country among the neighboring powers. Accordingly, the period was more violently turbulent than in any previous periods with shifts and reforms. In those days, Kim Yun-sik performed a crucial role in the administrative work for political reforms and was quite active in literary activities, thus held in high regard in both theory and practice. Kim Yun-sik’s collected literary writings, Unyangjib and Unyangsokjib include about 450 pieces of prose ritings. By employing various expressive techniques such as quotation, illustration, question and answer, dialogue, intonation, comparison, antithesis, and crescendo, he affirmed his point or sought changes in his writings. Therefore, this paper, which analyzes Kim’s prose works, has identified the characteristics of his expressive techniques seen in his prose and categorized them into four types. First, Kim employed the rhetorical techniques of quotation and illustration as the valid grounds of his logic. To be specific, Kim condensed what would otherwise have been complex and lengthy descriptions and expressions into short sentences, with the aim of awarding reliability and validity to his logic or highlighting his themes. Such sentence building techniques seem to be intended to create sentences that employ compression and symbolism for the purpose of facilitate the readers’ understanding. Therefore, such rhetorical techniques provided weight to sentences, enriched their content, and enabled the objective demonstration of his theory with diverse variations. Second, Kim frequently used question-and-answer exchange as a way to further his argument. In using the question-and-answer exchange, other works assign questioner and respondent and proceed with question-and-answer exchange according to the same rules. In contrast, Kim Yun-sik made the reader harbor expectation as to the writer’s discourse through beginning by giving questions and answering them as the author and then trying variation through letting some other person questioning and himself answering, or logically persuaded the reader by turning himself into a third party speaker and thereby maintaining objectivity in his argument. Third, he kept the reader on edge by repeatedly using intonation and registering abrupt changes to the tempo of flow of the sentences, and further strengthened the tempo of the sentence by effectively exercising such phrases as contrastive in meaning or color. Fourth, Kim’s frequent use of antithesis contributed to plotting changes in the paragraphs by applying some discipline to prose with a view to avoiding the monotony derived from the free form, and improving the readability of prose by adding beautiful rhythmicality to it. Thus, Kim Yun-sik employed a prose writing technique that plotted changes and sought the rhetorical perfection of prose by applying diverse rhetorical techniques for the purpose of making himself excellently understood by his readers.
