치매 소설에 투영된 치매자의 주체적인 삶

국문 초록

인간의 삶은 과거, 현재, 미래의 연속선상에서 영위된다. 이러한 연속성을 유지시켜 주는 것은 바로 ‘기억’이다. 따라서 자신의 정체성을 인식하고, 주체적인 통제를 하기 위한 기본적인 기억을 망각해서는 인간으로서의 삶을 영위할 수가 없다. 문제는 단순한 기억이 아니라 삶의 연결고리를 망각하는 상태로, 바로 치매의 경우이다. 일반적으로, 치매환자들은 ‘망각’으로 인해 종종 현실을 인지하지 못하므로 주체적으로 삶을 살아가기가 어렵고, 그 때문에 그들이 주체적 삶의 열망을 가지고 있을 것이라는 가능성이 배제된다. 이 논문의 목적은 치매를 다룬 텍스트들을 통해서 치매환자들에게도 주체적인 삶을 영위할 권리가 있음을 밝히고, 그들 나름대로 주체적인 삶을 이끌어갈 능력이 있다는 것을 분석하는 데에 있다. 이 논문에서 고찰한 텍스트는 동시대 작가인 박완서와 앨리스 먼로(Alice Monro)가 치매를 담론으로 삼은 환각의 나비 와 참을 수 없는 비밀 그리고 호수가 보이는 풍경 이다. 치매의 상태에서도 인물들이 공통적으로 자신의 삶에서 자신이 주인공이 되는 주체적인 삶을 추구한다는 것을 기본 담론으로 삼고 있는 이 작품들은 두 작가가 노년에 들어 쓴 것들로, 치매를 바라보는 시선에 자신들의 경험이나 고민이 들어 있다는 점에서 치매자들의 삶에 보다 근접해 있다고 할 수 있다. 또한 이 작품들은, 치매자 개인의 주체적인 의지와 열망 등을 담은 그들의 총체적인 삶의 이야기를 통해서, 인간의 보편 적인 가치인 주체적인 삶과 인간의 존엄성 그리고 보다 바람직한 삶의 환경에 대한 대안을 모색하게 한다. 자신의 삶에서 주인공이 되고, 정체성을 잃지 않고, 위엄을 지키려는 치매자의 노력을 반영한 소설 속의 치매 담론은 유례없는 노령화시대에 모두가 준비하고 새겨야 할 메시지를 담고 있다.

영문 초록

Human life goes on a continuous line of past, present, and future. It is just ‘memory’ to maintain this continuity. Therefore, it is impossible to live a human life without the basic memories needed for self-awareness and self-control. The problem is not mere memory, but a state of forgetting the connection of life, that is the case of dementia. In general, People with dementia often do not recognize reality because of oblivion, so it is difficult to live their own life, and therefore the possibility that they will have such a longing is excluded. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the dementia patients ability to lead a subjective life and to reveal their right to live their own life through texts dealing with dementia. The texts examined in this paper are A Hallucinatory Butterfly , Unbearable Secret , and In Sight of the Lake that contemporary writers, Park Wan-seo and Alice Monro deal with as a discourse on dementia. Being written by the two writers in their old age, these works are closer to the lives of people with dementia in that they have their own experiences and concerns in their gaze of dementia. These works are based on the fact that even in the state of dementia, the characters pursue the subjective life in their own lives. These works seek to find alternatives to the subjective values of human life, human dignity, and a more desirable life environment through their collective life stories, which include the subjective will and aspirations of individuals with dementia. The dementia discourse in fiction which captures the efforts of people with dementia who are the first persons in their own lives, who are not losing their identities, and who are dignified, includes the messages to be prepared and engraved in the age of unprecedented aging.
