‘새 것 찾기’와 로컬리티의 서사* - 염인수의 문학 세계

국문 초록

본 논문은 해방공간 대전에서 문학가동맹 대전지부 위원장을 지낸 염인수의 문학세계를 세 단계로 나누어 살펴보고, 이를 통해 염인수의 문학세계가 지니는 정체를 규명하는 한편 그간 대전문학사, 나아가 한국문학사에서 배제되어 온 그의 자리를 복원할 수 있는 토대를 마련하는 데 목적을 둔다. 염인수 문학의 제1기는 해방공간 대전에서 단편소설을 창작한 시기로, 소설가 안회남의 추천으로 문단에 등단한 뒤 그가 근무하는 농사시험장을 배경으로 노사갈등을 다룬 작품들을 발표한 때이다. 염인수는 자신이 체험한 세계를 소설 쓰기로 재현하는 과정에서 관념적 태도로 계급갈등을 서사화하지 않고 노동자들 내면에 넘치는 생명력을 포착하는 미학적 태도와 감각을 보여준다. 제2기는 좌익작가라는 이유로 숨어 지내던 염인수가 일흔을 넘긴 나이에 2권의 소설집과 1편의 장편소설을 출간한 80년 대로, 이 시기 작품에는 현실과 허구의 경계를 허무는 서사적 반복 행위가 특징적으로 나타난다. 염인수는 수필과 소설의 장르 문법을 뒤섞고, 해방공간의 죽음 체험과 자신의 인생 편린을 반복적으로 서사화하면서 그만의 헤테로토피아를 창조한다. 제3기는 여든 이후 지속적으로 수필집을 창작한 시기로. 그는 소소한 일상과 그가 썼던 모든 작품들, 그리고 지나온 인생역정을 반복해서 수필로 기록한다. 그의 다시-쓰기는 말할 수 없는 것을 말하는 염인수만의 방식으로서 ‘체험의 표현’이 곧 문학이라는 그의 신념에 근거한다. 그에게 문학은 자신이 처한 환경에서 끊임없이 ‘새것찾기’를 하는 여정이라 할 수 있다. 염인수가 ‘새것찾기’로 명명한 탐구의 길에서 그의 글은 비로소 삶과 일치된 육체성을 획득한다. 문학으로 인해 상징적 죽음을 당하고 고통을 겪을 수밖에 없었음에도 염인수는 ‘글을 쓰는 자가 결국 작가’라는 명제를 그의 삶 자체로 증명해 보인다. 그래서 그의 글은 관념의 한계를 극복하고 육체성을 획득하는 문학적 이종성의 공간을 만들어내며 그 자체가 보편적 미학의 잣대로 평가해서는 안 되는 로컬리티의 글쓰기를 실천한다. 따라서 염인수가 지향한 문학은 진화적 시간 개념의 축이 아니라 삶이 이루어지는 공간의 축 위에 위치한 다. 염인수에 대한 정당한 문학적 평가를 바탕으로 그동안 대전문학사는 물론 한국문학사 에서 배제되고 지워진 그의 이름을 복원해야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the literary world of Yeom In-soo, who was the chairman of the Daejeon branch of the Korean Writers Alliance in the Liberation Period by dividing into three stages, and investigates the identity of the literary world of Yeom In-soo, meanwhile, it aims to lay the foundations for restoring his position that has been excluded from the history of Korean literature. The first term of Yeom In-soo s literature was the time when he created a short novel in the Liberation Period. and it was the time when published works dealing with labor disputes based on his an agricultural experiment station after he started his literary career by the recommendation of An Hoe-nam. Yeom In-soo shows a aesthetic attitude and sense that he captures the life force inside the workers without writing class conflicts in an abstract manner in the process of rewriting the world he experienced with his novels. The second term was the 80 s, when Yeom In-soo hid himself for being a left-wing writer, when he published two books of short stories and one novel at the age of over seventy. The works in this period feature a narrative repetition that breaks the boundaries between reality and fiction appear. He mixes essay and novel genre grammar and creates his own heterotopia by repeatedly portraying the death experience of liberation space and his life sculpture. The third term was when he created an essay book after he was 80. He writes essays over and over again about everyday life, all his works and past life. His re-writing is based on his belief that expression of experience is literature as a way of cheapness to say things beyond description. For him, literature is a journey in which he constantly find new things in his environment. On the trail of exploration, which Yeom In-soo calls for finding new things, is writing finally gets the physical quality that matches his life. Despite being forced to die and suffer symbolically due to literature, Yeom In-soo proves that he one who writes is a writer, by himself. Thus, his writing creates a space of literary heterogeneity that overcomes the limits of ideology and obtains physicality, and practices the writing of locality that itself should not be judged by the standards of universal aesthetics. Therefore, literature directed by Yeom In-soo is located on the axis of space where life takes place, not on the axis of evolutionary time concept. Based on the legitimate literary evaluation of Yeom In-soo, he should restore his name, which has been excluded from the history of Daejeon literature as well as Korean literature.
