진실을 가장한 허구:

국문 초록

‘유사역사학(pseudohistory)’이란 ‘종종 제도권 역사학계에서 사용하는 것과 유사한 방법을 사용하면서 역사 기록을 왜곡하거나 사실과 다르게 재현하기를 시도하는 유사학문의 한 형태’를 의미한다. 이 논문은 서양에서의 수많은 유사역사학 사례들 중 (1) 인류 문명의 발상지는 이집트이고 서양에서 이집트 문명을 훔쳐갔다고 주장하는 ‘아프리카중심주의(Afrocentrism)’, (2) 기존의 연대기는 모두 거짓이고 모든 역사를 새롭게 재구성해야 한다고 역설하는 ‘신 연대기(New Chronology}’, (3) 아메리카 대륙이 콜럼버스 이전에 이미 중국인들에 의해 발견되었다는 ‘콜럼버스 이전 대양(大洋) 간의 문명 접촉설’ 등 세 가지를 살펴보는 데 목적을 둔다. 이들 유사역사학이 갖는 몇 가지 특징은 다음과 같다. (1) 첫째, 유사역사학을 구성하거나 주장하는 사람들은 대부분 비제도권, 다른 직종에 속한 아마추어 역사가, 타 학문 분야의 학자들이다. (2) 둘째, 유사역사학은 언제나 기존 제도권의 주류 역사학계에서 공식적으로 인정하거나 승인된 또는 대체로 합의에 이른 역사적 사실들과 정면으로 배치되는 내용들을 주장한다. (3) 셋째, 유사역사학은 대체로 대중들 또는 특정 집단이나 민족 및 인종이 선호할 만한 또는 환상과 상상에 입각한 흥미 위주의 내용들과 주제들에 초점이 맞추어져 있다. 여기서 포퓰리즘, 민족주의, 인종주의 등의 이데올로기와 특정 의제의 메커니즘이 작동한다. (4) 넷째, 유사역사학은 대중과 소통하기 위해 대체로 인터넷, 스마트폰, SNS 등 새로운 매체의 환경과 기술을 이용한다. 물론 유사역사학이 많은 문제를 갖고 있는 것은 사실이다. 그러나 인공지능, 로봇, 가상현실 또는 증강현실 등 진실과 허구 사이의 경계가 점점 옅어져가고 그 경계 자체의 의미가 점점 사라져가는 4차 산업혁명과 포스트-포스트모더니즘 시대인 오늘날 정확한 증거와 엄밀한 진실만을 추구해야 한다고 주장하는 19세기적 역사학을 무작정 신봉하는 태도, 완벽하고 객관적이며 진실한 역사는 단 하나뿐이라는 관점 등도 재고되어야 한다.

영문 초록

‘Pseudo-history’ is a form of pseudo-science which often attempts to distort historical records or reproduce them in a different way, using a method similar to that used in institutional and academic history. This paper aims to examine three cases among the many pseudo-historical works in the West: (1) ‘Afrocentrism’, which claims that the birthplace of human civilization is Egypt, and that the West has stolen Egyptian civilization; (2) ‘New Chronology’ (Anatoly T. Fomenko), which emphasizes that all existing chronologies are false and that all history should be reconstructed; (3) ‘the theory of pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact’ (Gavin Menzies), which insists that the Americas were already discovered by the Chinese before Columbus. Some characteristics of these pseudo-histories are as follows: (1) First, most of the people who construct pseudo-historical studies are non-institutional, amateur historians without a historical background, and scholars of other disciplines. (2) Second, pseudo-history always contradicts historical facts that have been officially recognized, approved or largely agreed upon in the mainstream history of the existing system. (3) Third, pseudo-history focuses largely on contents and topics based on fantasy and imagination that are favored by the public or a particular religious or ethnic group. Here, the ideology of populism, nationalism, racism, and mechanisms of specific agendas work. (4) Fourth, pseudo-history uses the environment and technology of new media such as internet, smart phone, SNS to communicate with the public in general. Indeed it is true that pseudo-history has many problems. But today, in the fourth industrial revolution and post-postmodernism era, in which technologies such as artificial intelligence, robots, virtual reality or augmented reality emerge, and the boundaries between fact and fiction are blurred, and the meaning of boundaries itself become more and more vanishing, it is necessary to reconsider or give up the attitude of blindly believing in 19th-century-style history that claims that there is only one perfect, objective and true history based on accurate evidence.
