박인환의 시와 W.H. 오든의 󰡔불안의 연대 The Age of Anxiety󰡕의 비교문학적 연구* - ‘로제타’의 변용과 ‘불행한 신’의 의미를 중심으로 -

국문 초록

이 글은 󰡔불안의 연대󰡕의 ‘로제타’의 발화와 관련하여 박인환의 시에서 초점화되는 ‘인간적 가치’를 조명하고 ‘일곱단계’의 의미와 관련하여 오든이 형상화한 ‘신’과 대비하여 박인환의 ‘불행한 신’의 의미를 살펴보 았다. 오든은 ‘로제타’의 사랑을 초점에 두기보다는, 파멸되어가는 인간 세계들을 확인하고 신의 에덴을 향하지만 끝내 절망하는 모습을 초점화 하고 있다. 그런데 박인환은 오든의 인물들 중에서 ‘인간애’를 충만하게 보여주는 ‘로제타’라는 여성의 인간적인 사랑과 애도를 부각시켰다. ‘로 제타’의 변용과 대비되는 박인환의 ‘호흡이 끊긴 천사’는 시인이 지켜주 어야 하는 대상이었으나 그렇지 못하고 죽어버린 여성이다. 그는 사랑하는 이를 향한 애도를 초점화되며 애도하는 이의 ‘불행한’마음 속에 있는 ‘호흡이 끊긴’ 사랑하는 이에게서 ‘천사’ 곧 ‘신의 속성’을 발견한다. 즉그는 여인과의 사랑과 애도와 같은 ‘인간적인 가치들에’ 의미를 부여하며 그것들 속에서 ‘신적인 것’을 찾고 있다. ‘로제타’의 변용과 함께 유의성을 지닌 재제는 ‘일곱단계’를 들 수 있다. ‘일곱단계’는 “불안의 연대”의 2장과 3장의 제목이자 각 장의 구성원 리이다. ‘일곱 단계’의 의미는 1,2차 세계대전 및 6.25전쟁이라는 역사의 비극적 단계를 나타내면서 성경에서의 ‘일곱’, 즉 인간세계의 환난의 극단 혹은 신의 재림에의 희망이라는 상반되면서 양립적인 뜻을 나타낸다. 오든은 ‘일곱단계’의 구성을 경유하여 인간세계에는 어떠한 희망도 부재 하며 강력한 ‘신’의 처벌만이 있을 뿐이라는 철저한 절망을 형상화한다. 그 절망의 여정에는 유년기의 ‘엄격한 부모’의 형상이 자리잡고 있다. 유년기의 불행이 형상화된다는 점에서 오든과 박인환은 유사성을 지니지 만, 오든의 ‘엄격한 부모의 상’과 대비적으로 박인환은 ‘연민의 대상이자 분신으로서의 부모의 상’을 보여준다. 두 시인에게서 ‘신의 온정’의 세계를 향하는 길은 결핍 혹은 상처를 입은 인물들의 유년기 자아의 문제 즉 ‘일곱단계’의 여정 속에서 의식, 무의식적으로 떠올랐던 ‘부모의 형상’과 밀접한 관련을 지닌다. 즉 오든의 인물들은 시공간적 여행 속에서 심층적 이해가 결핍된 유년기 자아의 관점에서 과거의 상처만을 기억해내는 일에서 더 나아가지 못하고 있다. 그들은 인간들의 결점과 죄, 폭력과 전쟁의 사태를 일일이 들추어내면서 ‘엄격한 훈육’과 환치되는 인류를 처벌하는 신의 자취들을 발견하면서 다만 두려움 속에 허우적거리게 된다. 이런 의미에서 박인환이 전쟁의 공포 속에서도 함께한다고 의식하는 신의 형상은 중요한 의미를 지닌다.그는 ‘친우’와 ‘가족’을 염려하는 자리에서 자아의 내면을 응시하고 ‘신’ 을 부르며 ‘불안’으로부터 안정감을 찾는다. 즉 그의 ‘신’은 ‘불안한 신’이자 ‘불행한 신’이다(그의 작품들에서 ‘불안’과 ‘불행’이라는 말은 혼용되며 그 둘은 유사한 의미로 사용된다). 그것은 ‘절름발이 내 어머니’와 유사하게 그 자신의 내면에 자리잡은 분신으로서 나타난다. 그의 ‘신’은 고통스런 현실에 처함에도 자아에 내재된 ‘인간적인 가치들’을 인식하고자 하는 절박함 속에서 부상한다. 오든의 ‘로제타’의 ‘신’은 ‘나’와 ‘인간들’의 마음 속에 있다기보다는, 인간들 세계의 외부에 있는 ‘강력한’ 존재로서 구체화된다. 그는 전쟁과 같은 최악의 상황을 초래한 인간들을 처벌하는 신의 흔적들을 발견하며 낙원으로부터 쫓겨나 막막한 인류의 상황을 확인한다. 한편, 박인환은 사랑과 애도와 같은 ‘인간적 가치’에 의미를 부여하며 그것에서 ‘신성한’ 의미를 찾는 ‘현세주의적 경향’을 보여준다. 이것은 인간세계의 추악한 면과 신의 처벌상을 확인하고서 자신들을 구제할 신을 부르는 오든의 ‘관념주의적 경향’과 대비된다. 박인환에게 ‘불행한’(혹은 ‘불안한’)과 ‘신’ 이 결합적으로 존재하는 것은 ‘불행한 나’의 ‘신’ 즉 ‘불행한 인간들의 마음에 존재하는 신’이기 때문이다. 그의 ‘불행한 신’은 ‘1950년대 사절단’ 으로서 전쟁현실을 보고하고 친우들의 비참한 주검들을 목도하면서 불렀던 절박한 토로처이기도 하였다. 이것은 ‘현대시의 의의’를 “전후적인 황무지 현상과 광신”에서 “더욱 인간의 영속적 가치를 발견하는”것 즉 ‘인간의 가치’에 대한 그의 신념과 관련된다.

영문 초록

Park In-hwan gives much value to 󰡔the Age of Anxiety󰡕of Oden by introducing Oden group’s poetry and poetics in his poetics. He argues the stream of modern poetry focused on the ‘anxiety’ and ‘agony’ of modern people who lives before and after the Second World War, through indicating that the contemporary literature has tendency of the ‘system of anxiety’. There are many motives of 󰡔the Age of Anxiety󰡕 such as ‘dying women’, ‘seven ages as a meaning of time and space’, ‘dialogue in the pub’, and ‘monologue to the God’ in his poetry. Especially, conceptions related with ‘the seven ages’, and ‘the God’, main motives of 󰡔the Age of Anxiety, are important to examine his imagery of ‘consciousness of anxiety’ and ‘the God’. He uses frequently ‘anxiety’ and ‘unhappiness in his verse and prose, and makes imagery of ‘consciousness of anxiety’. he shows his constant aims to the ‘wretched God’ in those works. Especially, he deals with ‘Rosetta’ who is one of the four main characters of 󰡔the Age of Anxiety󰡕 and focuses on the love of her and her lover’s death. The feature of dealing with ‘Rosetta’ shows that it has connection with his ‘wretched God’. In addition, it can be contrasted with the imagery of Oden’s ‘Rosetta’ and ‘the God’. This essay examines ‘humanism’ of Park In-hwan’s poetry by viewing ‘Rosetta’ of 󰡔the Age of Anxiety󰡕 and the meaning of his ‘wretched God’ by comparing it with ‘the God’ of Oden. Oden describes ‘Rosetta’ as a guide to the Garden of Eden and a humane woman. Meanwhile, Park In-hwan describes ‘Rosetta’, ‘an angel who stop breathing’, as a dead object failed to be protected. ‘Rosetta’ of Oden is a guide to Eden but ‘Rosetta’ of Park In-hwan is a guide of a poet by giving his condolences. In other word, he pursues ‘the God’ by giving value to love, death, and condolences which are humanistic. Park In-hwan can be called as a realist, but Oden can be called as an idealist. Park In-hwan’s imagery is contrasted with that of Oden who pursues ceaselessly paradise made by God after assuring the ugliness of human and this world. The imagery of ‘Rosetta’s ‘God’ is not in the mind of ‘me’ and ‘people’, but in the outer world of people as a ‘powerful’ existence. This is related with the figure of God that punishes human who brought about the worst situation such as war. The ‘God’s world’ of ‘Rosetta’ is an Eden located far away and cannot be reached at in spite of constant hunting by characters including ‘Rosetta’. Consequently, characters of Oden seek only outer world where their soul can avoid agony or seek God’s world where they can be rescued. Meanwhile, it is not outer world but his inner world where is painful real self that Park In-hwan seek ‘humanism’ and ‘sanctity’. The ‘God’, to him, is an existence who exists in the poor. His ‘unhappy God’ is an existence who listens to his scream and gives condolences in the circumstance of his reporting horrors of the Korean war and witnessing the death of friends.
