야담을 통해 본 노인에 대한 인식과 그 의미

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 야담 속에 나타난 노인의 형상화 양상을 살펴보고, 이를 통해 노인에 대한 인식과 그 의미를 도출하는 데 있다. 고대사회에서 초월적 능력을 가진 존재로 추앙받던 신격(神格)으로서의 노인은 야담의 시대에 이르러서 그 위상이 약화되었다. 대신 괴이한 존재로 두려 움과 기피의 대상이 되거나, 가문과 개인의 영달을 예견하는 예언자로서 공경의 대상이 되었다. 한편으로 노인은 경륜을 지닌 존재로서 지혜와 경험의 전수자로 존경을 받기도 하였다. 이들 노인의 장수는 가문 번영의 상징으로 인식되었으며, 야담 속에서 자손이 번창하고 가문이 창달했을 때 노인의 삶은 축복받을 만한 것으로 그려졌다. 그러나 노인이 개인적 욕망, 특히 재물과 색(色)을 탐하는 경우에는 비난과 해학의 대상이 되기도 했다. 이러한 노인 인식의 저변에는 조선 사회가 바라던 노인의 이상적인 이미지가 존재한다. 야담 향유자들은 개인적 욕망이 거세된, 국가와 가문 번영의 상징으로서 노인의 이상적 모습을 추구했던 것이다. 이러한 인식은 현대에 이르러서 다시금 변화의 순간을 맞이했다. 우리 사회에서 노인을 어떻게 보고 있으며, 노인의 존재 가치는 무엇인지에 대해 고민해 볼 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine how the aged are figured and described and in yadam and also how they were accepted in the society. In ancient times, the aged were revered for their god-like nature with divinity, but in the times of yadam, their divinity became weakened. Instead, they were regarded as an object of fear or avoidance for being a peculiar being or objects of respect as a prophets who could foretold a family or person’s rise or fall. They were also admired for being people delivering their wisdom or experience as they were regarded to be experienced and knowledgeable. The long life of the aged is the symbol of a family’s prosperity, and in historical tales, their lives are described as something blissful when their descendants prospered and their families makes progressed. However, when they sought too much of personal desire freely, especially on wealth or lust, they become the object of blame as well as humor. On the base of such recognition on the aged, there existed ideal images about the aged that Chosun society pursued. Those enjoying historical tales then were conceived of as the ideal symbols of the aged as the country, from which personal desires should be abandoned for family’s prosperity. Such a way of valuing the aged remains in this contemporary age. Now is the time that we should consider how our society views the aged and what value their existence has.
