한국근대소설 속 스위트홈의 욕망과 계모의 표상

국문 초록

본고는 일제 강점기 소설에서 계모의 표상을 살펴보고 특히 이선희와 임옥인의 소설 속 계모의 서사가 어떠한 방식으로 신여성의 내면을 드러내며 어떤 의미를 갖는지 재고하고자 한다. 고전 설화에서 시작해 계모형 고소설과 신소설, 근대소 설에 이르기까지 계모는 가부장의 후처로서 전실 자식을 구박한다는 혐의를 받으며 처벌의 대상이 된다. 전실 자식의 재산이나 지위에 대한 시기로서 악행을 저지 르는 고전 소설 속 계모의 서사와 달리 스위트홈에 대한 욕망을 다루는 근대 소설 에서 계모의 악행이란 남편의 애정을 둘러싼 계모와 전실 자식 간 질투의 서사로 구성된다. 부부애를 두고 전실 자식과 질투의 관계를 형성할 수밖에 없는 자리에서 임옥인은 후처기 를 통해 의도적으로 현모양처의 모습을 과잉 연출하는 동시에 피아노와 삼면경과 같은 스위트홈의 기호를 즐기면서 남편의 혈연과 무관한 ‘내 것’을 잉태하는 계모의 모습으로 남성 혈연 중심의 가부장제에 일정한 비판과 저항을 나타낸다. 일제강점기 계모는 친모와 구분하여 차별하는 혐오발언에 의해 모성애가 결핍된 존재로서 타자화된다. 이선희는 연지 에서 계모에 대한 혐오발 언과 불가능한 모성애에 대한 강요에서 빚어지는 히스테리를 서술한다. 이를 통해 전실 자식을 구박하는 계모의 악행을 재현하는 대신 히스테리의 근원으로서 가부 장제 핵가족을 파괴하고 조롱하는 저항을 수행한다.

영문 초록

This study aims to search the representation of stepmothers in Korean novels at the colonial age and especially reconsider how the narrative of stepmothers shows the inside of new women’s and what is the meaning in Yi, Seon-hee and Lim, Ok-in’s novels. From a tale through ancient novels type of stepmother, new novels and to modern novels, a stepmother as a patriarch’s second wife became punished for the reason why she did not take care the children by husband’s ex-wife. In ancient novels the narrative of stepmother shows that her misdoings caused by her envy at the fortune or state what the children by husband’s ex-wife has. But in modern novels the narrative of stepmother which originated in the desire for a sweet home, her misdoing caused by her jealousy at the children by husband’s ex-wife so it composed to the narrative of jealousy for the husband’s love. In Lim, ok-in’s “The document of a stepmother”, the heroine, stepmother who not only over-produced herself as a wise mother and good wife but also joined the signal of sweet home like a piano and a mirror stand etc. criticised and resorted on the patriarchy based on men blood ties with getting her own (not husband’s blood) baby pregnant. At the colonial ages a stepmother was differentiated from a real mother and was regard that she had not maternal affection with hate speech. Yi, Seon-hee’s “Lipstick” narrates the hysteria caused by the hate speech about the stepmother and the coercion for impossible maternal affection to the children by husband’s ex-wife. So this work not represent a stepmother’s misdoing to the children by husband’s ex-wife, but it destroys and resorts the patriarchy nuclear family which caused her hysteria.
