국문 초록

이 논문은 임진왜란 해전에서 이순신의 조선 수군의 경쟁력의 실체를 첨단 수군과 이순신의 혁신 역량의 결합에서 규명하기 위한 것이다. 이를 위해 ‘Ⅱ. 첨단 조선 수군’에서는 임진왜란 초기 해전에서 드러난 막강한 조선 수군의 전투력을 살펴보았다. 그리고 임진왜란이 발발한 시점까지 조선 수군이 어떻게 발전되어 왔는지를 병력, 무기, 함선의 준비 측면에서 개관해 보았다. 이를 통해 수적 측면에서는 조선 수군이 일본 수군에 비해 절대 열세였지만 판옥선, 거북선으로 대표되는 조선 함선의 질적 전투력은 일본의 함선을 압도하였다는 것을 확인하였다. 이순신 제독은 수적으로, 질적으로 모두 열세의 함대가 아니라 수적으로는 열세였지만 질적으로는 우세한 함대를 이끌어 모든 해전에서 승리하였던 것이다. 이를 통해 볼 때 아무도 전쟁 준비를 하지 않았다고 알려진 우리의 역사 인식은 부분적으로 수정될 필요가 있다. 지상군의 경우는 준비가 미흡해서 개전초기부터 곤욕을 치렀지만, 수군의 경우는 나름대로 착실한 전쟁 준비가 있었다는 역사인식으로의 전환이 그것이다. ‘Ⅲ 이순신의 혁신’에서는 당파전술, 거북선의 돌격전술, 학익진 전술, 이순신의 해전 전술 종합 등 이순신 혁신의 성과를 해전 전술 측면에서 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 당파전술은 충돌전술이 아니라 함포 포격전술이었고, 거북선의 돌격전술은 근접포격전술이었으며, 학익진 전술은 집중포격전술임을 밝혔다. 거북선의 근접포격전술과 학익진을 활용한 집중포격전술은 모두 함포의 명중률을 향상시키기 위해 창안 한 이순신의 혁신의 산물이었다. 이순신은 활과, 화공(火攻)을 중심으로 한 재래식 전술과 신무기인 천자총통, 지자총통을 중심으로 한 첨단 전술을 적절히 결합하여 조선 수군을 당대 최고의 질적 전투력을 지닌 수군으로 변모시켜 놓았다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to show the realities of the Chosun Navy s competitiveness through its high-tech navy and the Admiral Yi Sun Sin s capacity for reformation. The strength of the Chosun Navy in the early Naval Battles of the Imjin Waeran was examined In II. Chosun s High-Tech Navy . And the up to the point where the Imjin Waeran began, the development of the Chosun Navy was analyzed through its military forces, weapons, and readiness of the warships. Through this analysis, it was shown that though the Chosun Navy was heavily outnumbered compared to the Japanese Navy, the Chosun Navy was able to overcome its numerical inferiority through its high quality warships such as the Pan-Ok-Sun and the Turtle Ship. Admiral Yi was able to lead his fleet to victory in all of the naval battles as he had a higher quality fleet compared to the Japanese Navy. The common view that there were no preparations prior to wars need to be revised based on this. At the beginning of the war, the ground forces were suffered due to the lack of preparation, but the navy was well-prepared on its own. In III. Admiral Yi s Revolution , from the perspective of naval tactics, Admiral Yi s revolutionary achievements were examined in terms of the Dangpa(당파) tactic, the Turtle Ship s Dolgyeok(돌격) tactic, the Hakikjin(학익진) tactic, and Admiral Yi s combined naval tactics, and more. Through this examination, it was revealed that the Dangpa(당파) tactic was naval gun bombardment, not a collision tactic, while the Turtle Ship s Dolgyeok(돌격) tactic was a proximity firing tactic, and the Hakikjin(학익진) tactic was a saturation bombing tactic. The Turtle Ship s proximity firing tactic and a saturation bombing tactic s use of Hakikjin(학익진) was all Admiral Yi s innovations to increase the accuracy of the naval guns. Admiral Yi, with the use of arrows and fire strikes, transformed Chosun s navy into a superior state by adequately merging tactics of conventional tactics and new weapons such as the Cheonjachongtong(천자총통) and Jijachongtong(지자총통).
