明將 吳惟忠의 충주 「吳總兵淸肅碑」 고찰

국문 초록

본 논문은 임진왜란 때 충주에 세웠던 명나라 장수 吳惟忠의 「吳總兵淸肅碑(淸肅碑이라고 약칭함)를 고찰한 문장이다. 임진왜란 때 명군 가운데 참된 군인의 표상이 될 장수가 몇몇 있었는데, 그 중의 한 명이 오유충이다. 오유충은 전장에서 군인의 본분을 다한 용맹성을 보여주었고, 또 주둔지에서 조선 백성을 보살펴주는 청덕심을 보여주었다. 조선 백성들이 오유충이 베풀어준 청덕을 기리는 비석을 무려 7곳이나 세워놓았다. 충주 오유충의「청숙비」는 그 중의 하나이다. 오유충이 충주에 들어와서 백성들이 전란 속에서 겨우 연명하고 있다며 부하들에게 민폐를 끼치는 일을 하지 말라는 엄명을 내렸고, 그 자신도 청간한 마음으로 모든 것을 민의에 따라 행하였다. 충주 백성들은 오유충의 청덕에 감복하여「청숙비」를 세웠다.「청숙비」의 ‘淸肅’ 두 글자는 오유충이 맑은 덕행과 엄숙한 영으로 충주 백성들을 보살펴주었다는 의미를 담아놓았다. 오유충의「청숙비」는 1597년(선조 30) 11월에 충주 武學堂 남쪽에 세워졌다. 일제강점기에 통치 당국에 의해 비석이 없어졌을 것으로 추측된다. 다행히도 일본 京都大學 中央圖書館에 정조 연간에 趙寅永 등 이 성책한 金石集帖 에 오유충의 「청숙비」탁본이 수록되어 있다.

영문 초록

I in this article have studied on a Ming general Wu weizhong s Ochongbyeong cheongsubi (Chengsubi淸肅碑 is shorhand for the title) located in Chungju(忠州). There were some generals who could be the symbol of true soldier among Ming generals during Japanese Invasion of Korea(1592-1598: 壬辰倭亂). One of them was Wu weizhong. Wu weizhong was brave in fight to fulfill his duty and showed his sense of public morality by giving relief to the poor people in a military post. There were seven places in which people erected a memorial stone to praise Wu for his virtue. Wu weizhong s Cheongsubi in Chungju was one of them. Wu weizhong issued a strict order to his men not to cause harm to the people because they barely managed to stay alive by war and he himself also acted according to the will of the people when he entered into Chungju. Therefore, Chungju people established Cheongsubi to pay a tribute to Wu s goodness. The two characters cheongsu of Cheongsubi contains the meaning that Wu weizhong looked after Chungju people with his pure virtue and strict order. Cheongsubi was erected in the south of Muhakdang in Chungju in November of 1597(the 30th reign year of Seonjo). It is supposed that the memorial stone was destroyed by Japanese colonial rulers during Japanese colonial era. Fortunately, a rubbing of Wu s Cheongsubi is collected in Geumseok jip cheom which was made by Jo inyeong(趙寅永) in the reign period of Jeongjo and now in the possession of Kyoto University(京都大學) Central Library.
