임진왜란 시기 李雲龍의 활동과 전후 군사체제 강화 노력

국문 초록

본 논문은 임진왜란 초기 해전에서 많은 역할을 하였을 뿐만 아니라 전쟁 이후 조선의 군사체제 정비에 많은 역할을 한 李雲龍의 전쟁 전후 활약과 국방체제 정비 노력에 대해 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이운룡은 임진왜란 전 여진과의 전투에서도 전공을 세웠고 임진왜란 초기에는 옥포만호로서 이순신 함대와 함께 옥포해전, 한산해전 등 주요 해전에서 중요한 역할을 하였다. 정유재란기에는 도산성 포위 전투 등 여러 전투에서 전공을 세웠다. 특히 전쟁 이후에는 경상좌수사로서 부산 일대의 방어체계를 정비하고 이어 삼도수군통제사로서 조선 수군의 군사력 강화 및 방어체제 정비 등에 많은 공을 세웠다. 삼도 수군통제사 이후에는 북방의 여진족의 위협이 가중되던 함경도의 남병사로 임명되어 군사력 증강 및 방어시설 강화에도 기여하였다. 이운룡의 남방과 북방 군사력 강화 노력으로 이 지역의 정세를 안정시키는 데에도 기여를 하였다. 향후 임진왜란 연구에서는 그동안 주목되지 않았던 인물에 대한 연구를 활성화하고 전쟁의 전체 상황에서 사건과 인물 등이 어떤 역할을 하였는지를 드러내는 작업이 절실히 요구된다.

영문 초록

This article focuses on General Yi Un-ryong (李雲龍, 1562-1610) and his achievements during and after the Imjin War. He played many important roles in the early naval battles of the Imjin War and made efforts to strengthen Joseon’s military system after the war. General Yi distinguished himself in the engagements with the Jurchen before the Imjin War. As a military official of Okpo(玉浦), he cooperated with Yi Sun-sin and played significant role in well-known naval battles such as the Battle of Okpo and the Battle of Hansan Island in the early years of the Imjin War. At the period of Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1597, or the Jeongyu War, Yi Un-ryong also took part in several battles, including Siege of Ulsan. After the end of the Imjin War, being a Naval Commander of Gyeongsang Left Area, Gyeongsang Jwasusa(慶尙左水使), Yi Un-ryong strengthened the defense system near Busan region. When Yi was the Naval Commander of the three Provinces, Samdo Sugun Tongjesa(三道水軍統制使), he reinforced Joseon’s Navy and made the navy defense system organized. Following that, appointed as a military commander of South Hamgeong province, he worked hard on the military buildup and strong fortification in the face of danger of the Jurchen. In this way, Genearl Yi Un-ryong contributed to protect both southern and northern areas of Joseon by beefing up military strength. Further research is needed to shed more light on overlooked historical figures during the Imjin War. Investigating their roles and relevant events in terms of overall context is necessary as well.
