절이도해전 관련 몇 가지 문제들

국문 초록

최근 들어 임진왜란 시기 해전 연구가 활발하게 이루어지고 있지만, 절이도해전에 대한 연구는 소략하다. 그것은 절이도해전에 관한 사료가 명확하지 않은 것이 가장 큰 이유였다. 본고에서는 이러한 관점에서 절이도해전의 경과에 대해서 관련 사료들을 분석하여 정리하고자 하였다. 임진왜란 시기 명 수군은 전쟁의 막바지인 1598년에 들어서 사로 병진작전을 추진하기 위한 목적으로 파병되었다. 도독 진린이 이끈 명 수군이 무술년 7월에 고금도 조선 수군 진영에 도착한 후 처음으로 벌어진 해전이 바로 절이도해전이다. 절이도해전에 대해서는 사료가 이분화되어 있어서 몇 가지 요소별로 해전 경과를 구성해 보았다. 이를테면 전투일자가 언제인가, 전투장소는 어디인가, 이순신은 전투에 직접 참가하였는가, 명 수군 도독의 전투 참가 여부, 전과는 어느 정도인가 등으로 나누어 분석해 보았다. 필자가 분석한 결과 절이도해전은 2가지 사료를 모두 수용할 수밖에 없는 결론을 도출하였다. 하나는 전투일자가 7월 19일로 볼 수 있고, 전투장소는 절이도 앞바다이며, 이순신이 직접 지휘하여 적선 50여 척을 분멸시킨 것으로 보았다. 다른 하나는 전투일자가 7월 24 일로 이 해전에서 이순신은 참가하지 않았으며 녹도만호 송여종이 8척을 이끌고 적선 11척을 맞아 6척을 나포하고 적 수급 70급을 벤 것으로 볼 수 있다. 2가지 중 어느 것을 채택해도 틀린 것은 아니다. 어쨌든 절이도해전에서의 승리는 명량해전 이후 고하도와 고금도에서 수군 재건 노력 결과를 시험한 무대였는데, 수군 재건에 성과가 있었음을 확인하는 장이 되었다. 아울러 명 수군에게 조선 수군의 우수성을 각인시킨 의미 있는 해전이었다. 이를 바탕으로 연합작전을 잘 추진하여 이어서 벌어진 예교성 수륙합공전과 노량해전에서 수로군이 제 몫을 다할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

Remarkable research papers have been results on the Imjin-War recently, however, the researches on the Sea Battle of Jeol-ee-do are not much satisfactory. The reason that the regretable reseaches are produced is due to the vague historical records. Here by, I would like to summarise the historical records by analyzing the process of the Naval Battle of Jeol-ee-do holding the view of the vague records. During the Imjin-War Ming’s naval forces were landed at the last time of the battles on 1598 for the strategies of Sa-ro-Byeung-Jin(the four-track operations). It was Jeol-ee-do battle that was the first battle when the Ming’s naval forces had arrived at the camp of Naval forces of Joseon leading by the general Jin Rin. The process of the battle is analysed each part since the historical records on the battle is different each from the records. The analysis are for instance, the date of the battle, the place of the battle, and had Admiral Yi ruled it, how about the Ming’s general also participated, how successful of the battle, so on. As long as I have found on the research, it has to compromise of the two records as well handling the battle of Jeal-ee-do island. The one date of the battle could be on the 19th of July and and battle-field is the front sea of the island, Jeal-ee-do. Admiral Yi lead the battle and fired more than 50 enemy vessels. The other record says that the date of the battle is 24th of July and Yi was not for the battle, and Song, yo jong who is leading the Nok-do lsland prepared the 8 ships to face the enemy with 11 ships, and 6 ships are seized and killed the 70 enemy troops. Either of the record is admitted. The meaning of the battle of Jeol-ee-do island was to test how the Joseon’s naval forces reinforced at Go-geum-do island and Go-ha-do island after the Myeongryang sea battle and the battle was successfully showed the work of Joseon’s naval forces was building fine. Also, the superb abilities of Joseon’s naval forces are shown to the Ming’s naval forces from this battle. This could make building the allied forces cooperative and as they face the battle of Ye-gyo-seong fortress battle and Noryang Sea Battle, they could role what they had to do.
