국문 초록

다문화 사회는 역사나 여건에 따라 다양한 형태를 띠기 마련이다. 그러므로 다문화 교육이 추구하는 공존과 화합 및 사회적 발전은 상이한 방식으로 실현될 수밖에 없다. 특히, 우리나라는 짧은 기간에 걸쳐서 급속하게 다문화 사회로 진입하고 있으며, 거기에는 또한 외국인 근로자와 결혼 이민자 및 새터민이라는 특이한 사회적 요인이 배경으로 작용하고 있다. 우리나라의 다문화 교육이 동화주의 노선을 걷고 있는 것은 우리의 다문화 사회가 나타내는 그러한 특징에 기인한 것이라고 말할 수 있다. 그러나 우리나라의 다문화 교육이 걷고 있는 동화주의 노선은 일종의 중간지점에 지나지 않는다. 다문화 교육의 노선을 문화 민주주의 노선 또는 균형주의 노선으로 선회시키는 것은 그것에 관한 세계적인 추세일 뿐만 아니라 이론적으로나 실제적으로 현재 우리나라의 다문화 교육이 안고 있는 가장 화급한 과제로 여겨지고 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explicate the nature multi-cultural society and the direction of multi-cultural education in Korea. Generally speaking, multi-cultural education is a series of activity to escape the oppositions and troubles of multi-cultural society, and to develop the society in a family atmosphere. But, there are various kinds of multi-cultural societies in accord with their histories and environments. The ideas of multi-cultural education are realized in their special contexts. Korea becomes to multi-cultural society in a short period, because of several causes: foreign workers, marriage immigrants, and refugees from north Korea. So, adoption of our culture and language were critical problems to aliens and the authority. Therefore, assimilationism is selected as a principle of multi-cultural education in Korea. But, assimilationism is not a adequate direction to keep up, but a transitional line to be better. As matter of fact, assimilationism is estimated as the first stage of multi-cultural education theoretically. By that reason, cultural democratism becomes a new direction instead of assimilationism. Eventually, our country has to accept the cultural democratism as a principle way of multi-cultural education.
