서남아시아에 대한 학생들의 고정관념과 사회 교과서 내용 분석 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 우리나라 고등학생들이 가지고 있는 서남아시아에 대한 고정관념을 조사하고, 이러한 고정관념 형성에 교과서가 어떻게 기여하고 있는지를 추론하기 위해 수행하였다. 이를 위해 학생들이 가지고 있는 서남아시아(인)에 대한 고정관념과 이 들이 학습에 활용하였던 사회 교과서를 분석하였다. 서남아시아(인)에 대한 고정관념을 조사한 결과, 서남아시아 사람들은 겸손하고 친절하지만 공격적이고 고집이 세며 깨끗하지 못하다는 고정관념을 가지고 있었다. 교과서를 분석한 결과, 서남아시아에 대한 정보가 매우 부족하였으며, 제공되는 정보도 부정적인 경우가 많았다. 이러한 분석 결과를 바탕으로 교과서 내용 선정 및 기술 방식에 대하여 몇 가지 제언을 하였다. 첫째, 서남아시아 지역의 보편적이고 대표적인 문화 현상을 다루어야하며, 둘째, 갈등이나 전쟁을 소개할 때는 그 사건의 이면에 존재하는 다양한 맥락을 소개할 필요가 있다. 셋째, 우리나라 문화와의 ‘다름’ 과 ‘같음’을 조화롭게 부각시킬수 있는 내용 선정이 필요하고, 넷째, 교과서간 기술 빈도나 가치 지향성의 차이를 줄이기 위해 노력해야 한다.

영문 초록

The study aimed to identify what influence social studies textbooks have had on the formation of students‘ stereotype toward Southwest Asia. For this purpose, the study investigated students‘ stereotype and social studies textbooks in relation to Southwest Asia. According to the research, Korean students consider Southwest Asians as aggressive, stubborn, and dirty, even though they also acknowledge their kindness and humbleness. In addition, social studies textbooks provide little and negative information on Southwest Asia. The findings from the research suggested what contents social studies textbooks should include and how social studies textbooks will describe those contents. Firstly, as for Southwest Asian cultures, textbooks should cover universal and traditional ones. Secondly, conflicts and wars should be introduced along with their various backgrounds behind them. Thirdly, textbook should select contents to emphasize sameness and difference. Lastly, each textbook should maintain balance in terms of its frequency and value when it describes Southwest Asia.
