영문 초록

This paper focuses on pragmatic presupposition in English-Korean subtitling translation of the film, A River Runs Through It. The concept of presupposition has been used in the field of semantics. In pragmatics, pragmatic presupposition has been researched on the basis of discourses between speaker and hearer. As thus, this paper is interested in pragmatic presupposition because subtitling is composed of dialogues. The results of analyzing English-Korean subtitling translation from the film, A River Runs Through It, show pragmatic presupposition can be a word, a phrase, and a expression. Presupposition plays a key role in the flow of utterances. Also, it is influenced by screen images, and in target text, it is conveyed in the form of substitution. In particular, pragmatic presupposition in subtitling from some of channels indicates explicit and objective expressions. Also, pragmatic presupposition reveals coherence and cohesion in target text for better understanding the contents of film storyline to audiences. This phenomenon is limited on English-Korean subtitling translation of the film, A River Runs Through It. And we expect that pragmatic presupposition in subtitling will help audiences increase readability.
