Research into reading strategies and strategy instruction has indicated their effectiveness and beneficial effects on reading, which, in turn, leads to translation improvement. This article reviews research on the effectiveness of the use of L2 reading strategies and strategy instruction. Based on research conclusions, this article discusses the patterns of strategy use adopted by both proficient and less proficient readers to shed light on what kinds of strategies should be taught for better translating. In addition, metacognitive awareness is also stressed in that it helps readers become goal-oriented and take ownership of their reading and translating processes.
This article presents nine major reading strategies that contribute to reading and translating: prior knowledge, mental imagery, skimming and scanning, text structure, comprehension monitoring, question answering, question generating, inference and summarizing.
