유치원 교사의 과학교육에 대한 신념과 실제: 과학교육의 목적및 가치에 대한 신념을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 유치원 교사의 과학교육에 대한 신념과 실제를 알아본 사례연구로서 다음의두 가지 연구문제를 살펴보았다. 첫째, 유치원 교사는 과학교육에 대하여 어떠한 신념과 생각을 가지고 있는가? 둘째, 유치원 교사의 과학에 대한 신념은 교사의 과학교수 활동과 관계가 있는가? 연구는 미국 텍사스 주, A 시의 공립 유치원 교사에 대한 다양한 인터뷰와 과학수업 관찰 및 각종 수업 자료(월간, 주간, 일일, 교육계획안 및 교육자료 등) 수집을 통하여 이루어졌다. 연구에 대한 결과로, 첫째, 본 연구의 참여 교사는 자신의 과학 수업의 가장 큰 목적은 유아들이 과학에 흥미를 느끼는 것이라는 흥미를 가지고 있었다. 이를 위해 교사는 과학 주세 선정 및 준비를 유아들의 흥미에 따라 변화시키고자 하였으나, 실제 로는 텍사스 주 정부, 학군, 또는 학교의 교육과정을 따라야하는 어려움이 있었다. 둘째, 교사는 유치원의 과학 활동은 유아들이 자신의 환경 및 세상을 보는 데 긍정적인 영향을 미친다는 신념을 가지며 특히, 유치원 시기가 과학교육을 위하여 가장 중요한 단계라 생각하 였다. 하지만 이러한 신념으로 인하여, 자신의 과학적 지식의 부족함을 걱정하는 경향이 있었다. 결론적으로, 연구 참여 교사의 신념과 교수활동의 실제는 서로 영향을 미치고 있었으나 교사의 신념 이외에도 다양한 요인에 의하여 영향 받고 있었다.

영문 초록

This study investigates a kindergarten teacher’s beliefs and her teaching practices in science education through a qualitative case study. This research addresses these topic by exploring two key issues: First, it illustrates how a kindergarten teacher think about teaching science to the students. Second, this study demonstrates how the teacher’s beliefs about the goals and values of teaching science affect her teaching practices in the classroom. Data collection for this study was undertaken in two phases. The first phase included an initial interview and the second one had classroom observations and interviews with the participant. Based on the categories of teachers’ beliefs, this study found a relationship between a teacher’s beliefs and how she teach science. In particular, the participant teacher focused on children’s interest in science. Therefore, the teacher believed that her role is to support the students’ interest and help to keep their fun in learning in her science lessons. However, this study also shows that some of the teacher’s beliefs did not match the teaching practices in science lessons. As evidence, contrary to her beliefs, the teacher did not follow the students’ interest because of the limited time allowed for science.
