이청준의 『신화를 삼킨 섬』에 나타난 신화적 리얼리즘 양상 연구

국문 초록

『신화를 삼킨 섬』에서 이청준은 제주 4·3사건이라는, 언어로 온전하게 재현하기 힘든 비통한 역사를 재현하기 위해 수많은 신화와 설화들을 소환한다. 이청준은 신화의 구조를 인식의 지평으로 삼아 일차원적 언어로 표현할 수 없는 복잡다기한 현실을 형상화하려고 시도했다. 『신화를 삼킨 섬』에는 서로 갈등하는 가운데 역동적으로 상호작용하는 온갖 인간사들이 등장한다. 소설을 구성하는 여러 층위에서 갈등을 일으키는 다양한 요소들은 이를 해소하기 위해 서로 협상하려 한다. 그 가운데 대표적인 사례가 용서와 해원의 가능성과 불가능성에 대한 질문에 대해 소설이 어떠한 답변을 내리는가에 관한 문제다. 독자는 『신화를 삼킨 섬』이 이러한 질문에 대해 만족할만한 답변을 주지 않는다는 사실을 깨닫게 된다. 『신화를 삼킨 섬』은 기대 층위에서는 종결에 도달했으나 질문 층위에서는 종결에 이르지 못한 서사, 즉 종결의 부재를 주요한 특징으로 갖는 텍스트이다. 이 소설의 마지막 장면은 내내 지속되었던 갈등 가운데 결국 해결된 것은 없으며 애도는 영원히 지연될 것임을 암시하면서 끝난다. 이 가운데 소설은 심연 속에서 서로를 비추는 거울처럼 현실에 자신을 맞세움으로써 열린 결말로 향하는 노정에 있는 삶을 형상화하는 기호가 된다. 『신화를 삼킨 섬』에 대한 독해는 과거의 상처에 대한 용서와 치유라는 표면적 주제를 넘어서 4·3을 비롯한 역사의 비극 속에서 짓밟혀온 민중과 지역공동체의 참상을 기억 한 가운데 각인시키는 일을 동반한다. 그런 의미에서 등장인물들이 벌이는 위령굿은 신화의 내용이 축약되어 있는 무대로서, 용서와 해원의 사건에 대한 재현으로서, 그리고 작가의 글쓰기에 대한 알레고리로서 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 이청준에게 있어 ‘소설질’ 즉 소설 쓰기는 모순되는 두 개념이 만들어내는 역설과 열린 결말을 통해 실재계적 사건인 ‘트라우마’를 역사라는 상징계에 기입하는 방식을 가리키는 것이었다. 따라서 소설 속의 위령굿과 작가의 소설 쓰기는 역시 현실에 더해져서 용서와 애도의 불가능성에 대해 증언함으로써 현실의 결핍을 드러내는 대리보충적 행위라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Island Embracing Mythology is the novel written by Yi Chung-jun in his later years. Yi Chung-jun employed many myths and folktales in order to represent Jeju 4ㆍ3 incident(April third resistance) too tragic to be represented thoroughly with language. He tried to embody the complicated present which cannot be presented with one-dimensional language using the structure of mythology as the horizon of consciousness. In Island Embracing Mythology various events dynamically interplays while coming into conflicting and running into one another. These agons and conflicts are inclined to negotiate with one another within this novel’s plot. The representative one among varied agons and conflicts in Island Embracing Mythology is the question of the possibility of forgiveness and resolution. Readers of this novel become aware of the fact that this novel doesn’t have the satisfactory answer about this question. Island Embracing Mythology is the narrative which can arrive at the closure in the level of expectation but cannot in the level of question. The last chapter of this novel ends with the scene implying that agons and conflicts appeared in the text have never been resolved eventually and mourning will be delayed eternally. Through this process, the novel becomes the sign itself embodying the human lives while putting them against the present in the way towards the open closure as if reflecting their images onto mirrors in mis-en-abyme. The reading of Island Embracing Mythology exceeds the horizon of the apparent theme of forgiveness and healing of the trauma of 4ㆍ3 incident and reaches the stage in which we can inscribe the tragic reality of people and local community into the midst of our memory. In that sense, the gut(a kind of exorcism for mourning) has the important meaning as the stage contracting the narratives of myths, the representation of the events of forgiveness and resolution and the allegory of the author’s writing. Both the gut and the author’s writing are the supplementary act revealing the lack of the present while testifying the impossibility of the forgiveness and the mourning added to the present.
