具常의 『그리스도 폴의 江』과 불교적 상상력

국문 초록

이 글은 구상 시인의 시작 여정 속에서 최고봉을 차지한다고 해도 과언이 아닌 그의 연작시집 『그리스도 폴의 강』 속에 나타난 불교성 및 불교적 상상력을 탐구하는 데 목적을 두고 씌어졌다. 이와 같은 시도를 하게 된 것은 구상 시 전편에 불교성 및 불교적 상상력이 두루 나타나고 있으며, 그 가운데서도 이 시집 속에 그런 경향이 특히 비중 있게 내재돼 있기 때문이다. 구상은 일반적으로 가톨리시즘에 그의 전 생애를 바친 시인으로 알려져 있지만, 이것은 일면적 진실일 뿐, 실제로 그의 시에는 범종교적이라 할 만한 종교적 원형이 장애 없이 통합되어 들어 있으며 특별히 불교성 및 불교적 상상력이 아주 강하게 배어 있다. 구상의 시집 『그리스도 폴의 강』에 나타난 불교성 및 불교적 상상력의 대강은 다음과 같은 몇 가지로 제시될 수 있다. 첫째, 시어의 상당 부분이 불교용어 및 불교적 표현으로 이루어졌다는 것이다. 둘째, 불교적 모티프나 이미지 또는 불교적 상징이 적잖게 들어 있다는 것이다. 셋째, 불교적 세계관이 기저에 깔려 있다는 것이다. 특히 ‘연기공성’과 ‘연기일체’라고 부를 수 있는 불교적 세계관은 가톨릭을 비롯한 다른 종교에서 찾아보기 어려운 불교 특유의 세계관인데 구상은 이것을 수용하여 원용하고 있다는 것이다. 넷째, 불교적 인간관이 들어 있다는 것이다. 인간이 그 자체로 불성, 곧 ‘신성한 실재’를 지닌 존재라는 인식과 더불어, 그런 인간들이 회심과 수행을 통하여 진리 혹은 신성한 실재 그 자체가 될 수 있다는 믿음이 들어 있는 것이다. 다섯째, 불교적 현실관이 들어 있다는 것이다. 깨닫지 못한 인간들이 사는 이 세상은 예토이지만 그 인간들이 눈을 뜨고 정진을 한다면 지금/이곳에서 정토의 구현이 가능하다는 생각을 보여주고 있는 것이다. 시집 『그리스도 폴의 강』은 이와 같은 불교성 및 불교적 상상력으로 다음과 같은 시적 성과를 이룩하는 한편 우리 시사 속에서 남다른 의의를 획득하고 있다. 그 첫째는, 구상 시인이 ‘진리’를 개개의 종교나 그 교리보다 앞에 두고 산 시인으로서 그의 시에서 배타적 종교성으로 인하여 분열되었던 기성 종교나 교리가 포용되고 통합되는, 이른바 화쟁의 미학이 성립되었다는 것이다. 둘째는, 불교를 통하여 가톨릭 신앙을 보다 넓은 차원에서 조명하고 펼칠 수 있는 가능성을 열어놓았다는 점이다. 이것은 가톨릭계를 위해서도, 또 가톨릭 문학을 위해서도 기여할 수 있는 점이다. 셋째는, 시의 미학적인 측면에서 보다 넓고 깊은 세계를 구현하는 계기가 되었다고 볼 수 있다는 것이다. 구상의 불교적 안목과 포용력은 『그리스도 폴의 강』의 전체적 구성이나 문체를 원숙하게 하고 그 정신적 품격을 높여주는 데 훌륭하게 기여하고 있다. 이와 같은 구상의 시를 통하여 모처럼만에 참다운 의미에서의 ‘화쟁’의 사상과 미학을 만날 수 있다. 그리고 포용과 융합, 열림과 소통이 시정신의 향상이나 예술미학의 고양에 얼마나 든든한 토대를 마련해 주는지를 절감할 수 있다. 구상의 시집 『그리스도 폴의 강』이 남다른 감동을 주고 또 한국 시사에 남을 문제작으로서 손색 없는 경지를 열어보인 것은 바로 시인의 이와 같은 자세와 추구 그리고 마음의 작용이 빚어낸 것이라 생각된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore Buddhist characteristics and Buddhist imagination found in The Christopher s River, poet Gu Sang’s series collection of poems, which can be regarded as the greatest masterpiece in his journey of writing poetry. The reason this author tries this is that Buddhist characteristics and Buddhist imagination are prevalent in Gu Sang’s poetry in general, and especially such tendencies are internalized in this collection of poems so much more. Although Gu Sang is known as a poet who devoted his entire life to Catholicism generally, this is only partly true. In fact, his poems exhibit religious prototypes that can be said to embrace all religions integratively with no obstacles, and particularly, Buddhist characteristics and Buddhist imagination are very thickly soaked into them. Buddhist characteristics and Buddhist imagination found in Gu Sang’s collection of poems, The Christopher s River, can be briefly summed up as follows: as mentioned earlier in the main body, first, the poetic words used in it are mostly Buddhist terms or expressions. Second, Buddhist motives, images, or symbols are not a few, either. Third, there is an underlying Buddhist view of the world. In particular, the Buddhist view of the world that can be referred to as ‘Dependent Origination of Emptiness(緣起空性)’ or ‘Dependent Origination of Oneness(緣起一體)’ is uniquely found in Buddhism, not other regions including Catholicism, but Gu Sang does accept and quote those. Fourth, it also includes the Buddhist view of humans. In other words, it internalizes the belief that humans are the beings equipped with the nature of Buddha, that is, ‘sacred substance’, and also, humans can be the trust or sacred substance itself through change of heart and cultivation. Fifth, it embraces the Buddhist view of actuality. He deems that the world where unenlightened humans are living is the Mundane Land, but if those humans open their eyes and devote themselves, they can realize the Pure Land here, now. If so, what kind of effect can the collection of poems, The Christopher s River, exhibit with such Buddhist characteristics and Buddhist imagination, and what meaning or significance can it provide into his poetry and our current events? About these questions, we may be able to mention some of the points as below: First, Gu Sang is a poet who lived his life while valuing ‘truth’ more than any of the religions or their doctrines. And by that, he thinks existing religions or doctrines divided within exclusive religious sentiments become embraced and integrated, and so-called aesthetics of ‘Harmony of Otherness(和諍)’ can be established. Second, he opens the possibility to view and unfold Catholicism in a broader perspective through Buddhism. This can contribute to not only Catholic circles but Catholic literature as well. Third, he created a chance to actualize an even bigger and deeper world in the aspects of poetic aesthetics. Gu Sang’s Buddhist insight and tolerance do contribute to enhancing The Christopher s River’s overall organization, style, or spiritual class. To wit, through Gu Sang’s poetry works, we can encounter a true world that is more elevated and oriented to mutual living in terms of ‘Harmony of Otherness(和諍)’ for a change in a general perspective. It means we can experience tolerance, convergence, opening, and communication are the grounds to accomplish such a great outcome. The Christopher s River has opened the stage that can move us in such a unique way and is flawless as a controversial work is because of the poet’s such attitudes, pursuit, and functioning of his mind. If time permits, it would be a meaningful task to explore the world of ‘Harmony of Otherness(和諍)’ grounded on all the poetic works of his.
