백석 시의 인지구조 연구

국문 초록

논문은 민족시인 백석의 대표작 가운데 하나인 「북방에서」를 인지시학의 방법으로 분석하고자 했다. 이를 위해 필자는 다양한 인지정보를 기반으로 한 시의 의미 구조를 밝히고자 했으며, 또한 그 구조 형성에 작용하는 자동화 일탈의 방식으로서 은유, 의인화, 그리고 상호텍스트성 등을 분석하였다. 분석결과, 백석의 「북방에서」는 일제식민치하에서 살았던 “나”가자신의 삶을 반성적으로 고백하고 자책하는 시이다. 그의 고백은 부끄럽다는 것과 되찾고 싶다는 것으로 요약된다. 부끄럽다는 것은 민족사의 위기 상황 속에서 민족사의 터전인 “북방”을 버리고 “먼 앞대”라는 속악한 현실 속에서 안일한 삶을 영위했다는 생각에서 비롯된다. 물론 “나”의 이러한 판단은 백석이라는 한 시인의 삶에 견주어볼 때 다소 과장된 측면이 있지만, 그 과장이 오히려 자기 고백의 진실성을 담보해 주고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 또한, 되찾고 싶다는 것은 먼 옛날의 영광스러운 민족사를 회복하고자 하는 열망과 관계 깊다. 이 시가 “나”의 자책과 회한이 주조를 이루고 있긴 하지만, “새 옛날” 즉 새로운 역사에 대한 전망을 상실하고 있지 않다. 따라서 “나”는 불운한 민족사에 대한 성찰을 토대로 새로운 전망을 내놓을 줄 아는 한 인간 혹은 한민족의 모습이다. 더구나 이러한 모습이 백석 자신의 시 「목구(木具)」나 동시대 시인 이육사의 「광야」 등에서도 유사하게 드러난다는 점은 많은 시사점을 제시한다. 요컨대 「북방에서」는 다양한 인지 정보들이 시학적인 차원에서 밀도 높게 교직되면서 충실한 의미 구조를 보여주는 시로서, 일제말기의 시기가 역사의 암흑기일지언정 시의 암흑기라고는 말할 수 없다는 사실을 증명해 주는 중요한 시사적 자료이다. 백석 시 가운데 구체적인 역사성을 담보하는 독특한 작품인 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzes, by a cognitive poetic approach, “In the Northern Region” a key poem of Baekseok, who is one of the significant national poets. Based on various cognitive information, this paper focuses on metaphors, personification, and intertextuality of “In the Northern Region” arguing that those poetic devices are used as ways of breaking away from automation. “In the Northern Region” is a poem of self-reflection, self-confession, and self-blame of a speaker, “I” who lives in the Japanese colonial era. Specifically, this paper gives more attention to the self-confession of “I” who feels “ashamed” but at the same time longs for “restoration.” This paper argues that “I” feels ashamed because of his strong self-consciousness that “I” has lived in an indolent life compromising the vulgar reality of a further down Southern area and abandoning the Northern region, which used to be a base of the national livelihood. This self-blame sounds rather harsh considering the life of the writer, Baekseok but this harsh self-criticism makes the speaker’s self-confession rather genuine and convincing. Also, this paper argues that longing for “restoration” is closely related to the desire for restoring the glorious national history. This poem mainly describes self-blame and regret of “I” but does not lose hope for and prospect of making a new history, “New Oldness.” Therefore, “I” is a symbol of a person or a nation which can present a new prospect based on a fierce reflection, and the unfortunate and tragic national history. Furthermore, importantly, this aspect can be witnessed in Baekseok’s another poem, “Mokgu” and Yuksa Lee’s “Gangya”. In sum, “In the Northern Region” epitomizes the fact that the late Japanese colonial era can be interpreted as a dark age of the Korean history but not for Korean poetry. This work is a unique piece of Baekseok’ works that include specific historicity.
