승전(僧傳)의 불전(佛傳) 구조와 그 의미

국문 초록

이연구는<원효불기>의 구조와 그 의미를 살핀 것이다. 먼저 불전과 승전의 전승 환경을 고찰한 다음, <원효불기>의 불전 구조를 살펴보았다. 이를 바탕으로 <원효불기>의 불전 구조가 갖는 의미를 조망해 보았다. 지금까지 논의한 것을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 불전과 승전의 전승환경을 검토하였다. 불전은 부처의 일대기를 형상화한 것으로 불교신화적인 특성이 강하다. 고통에 시달리는 만민을 구제하는 과정이 신화에서의 영웅과 흡사하기 때문이다. 이 불전은 신앙의 대상으로 여겨지며 아주 이른 시기부터 서사 담론으로 기능하였다. 승전 또한 불전의 구조를 따랐기에 종교적으로 숭신의 대상이 되어 왔다. 불전과 승전 모두 신앙물이면서 서사물로 기능해 온 것이다. 둘째, <원효불기>의 불전 구조 양상을 살펴보았다. 먼저 부처의 일대기를 여덟 개 단위로 구획하여 검토하였다. 그 결과 불전은 전형적인 종교영웅서사임을 알 수 있었다. 다음으로 <원효불기>의 불전 구조 양상을 살펴보았다. <원효불기>도 불전과 마찬가지로 종교적인 영웅서사물로 유통 되었다. 거시구조는 물론 미시적인 화소(話素)까지 불전을 전제한 작화이기 때문이다. 셋째, <원효불기>의 불전 구조가 갖는 의미를 검토하였다. <원효불기>는 불전을 닮아서 초월적인 담론이 되었다. 이 초월적인 담론은 서사문학이 허구화하는 데 크게 기여하였다. 게다가 민중지향성 때문에 속문학의 발양에도 보탬이 되었다. 불전은 아시아의 보편문학이지만, 승전은 자국문학으로 논의할 수 있다. 그래서 승전이 활성화되면서 불전의 영웅서사구조를 후대의 영웅서사물에 물려줄 수 있었다. 따라서 역사적인 영웅서사의 연원을 건국신화에서 찾듯이 종교적인 영웅서사의 근원을 불전에서 찾아야 마땅하다.

영문 초록

This thesis is studied about structure and its meaning of Wonhyobulgi. First a transmission environment of Buddha biography and biography of Buddhist monk is considered, and a Buddha biography’s structure of Wonhyobulgi is considered. Based on this, the meaning of Wonhyobulgi’s Buddha biography’s structure is surveyed. To sum up, the discussion so far as follows. First, it is considered about transmission environment of Buddha biography and biography of Buddhist monk. Buddha biography is a imagery of Buddha’s life story, so it has a characteristic of Buddhism myth strong. Because the process of helping all the people that suffered from pain is similar with a hero of myth. This Buddha biography is considered an object of faith, and it is functioned as a narrative discourse early. biography of Buddhist monk has a Buddha biography’s structure, so it became an object of worship religiously. Buddha biography and biography of Buddhist monk are religious object all together, and it is functioned as a narrative. Second, it is considered about a Buddha biography’s structure of Wonhyobulgi. First, Buddha’s life story is divided into eight units and considered. Consequently Buddha biography is typical religion hero narrative. Second, the structure aspect of Wonhyobulgi is considered. Wonhyobulgi is distributed as a religious hero narrative in common with Buddha biography. Because it is a painting premise Buddha biography microscopic material for storytelling as well as macro structure. Third it is considered about a meaning of Wonhyobulgi’s buddhist structure. Through a Buddha biography’s structure, Wonhyobulgi’s literary merit is that.Wonhyobulgi is similar with Buddha biography, so it became transcendental discourse. This transcendental discourse contributes to a fictionalized narrative very much. Besides because of public directivity, it helped vulgar literature. Buddha biography is an universal literature of Asia, biography of Buddhist monk can be cross lips our own country literature. So an hero narrative structure of Buddha biography can be turn over the later hero narrative. Therefore as an origin of historic hero narrative is found the birth myth of a nation, so an origin of sacred hero narrative should be found with a Buddha biography.
