국문 초록

이 논문에서는 박완서 초기소설 『나목 』(1970)에 나타나는 “환상성” 이 현실의 불합리성에 의해서 발생하게 된 작가 내면의 상처(균열)에서 비롯된 것이며, 이는 근본적으로 현실을 전복시키고자 하는 열망을 내포하고 있다는 사실을 고찰하였다. 박완서의 등단작 『나목 』(1970)은 작가의 6.25전쟁 체험을 바탕으로 쓰여진 소설이다. 이 작품은 6.25전쟁을 다룬 다른 소설들과 변별되는 하나의 뚜렷한 특징을 보여주는데, 이는 바로 “환상성”이다. 환상성은 이데올로기적 환상과 미학적 환상으로 구분할 수 있다. 먼저 이데올로기적 환상은 한반도를 전쟁의 소용돌이로 몰고 갔던 근본적 원인이다. 이는 대립되는 두 이데올로기의 내용과 형식에 대한 서술을 삭제하고, 이데올로기 간의 대립에 의해서 발생된 참혹한 결과(사건)만을 서술하거나, 그러한 결과를 시각적인 이미지로 전면에 제시하는 서술전략을 통해서 단박에 해체되는 양상을 보여준다. 반면 미학적 환상은 전쟁으로 인한 인물들의 내면의 상처에서 야기된 “공상”, “꿈”, “환각” 등을 문학적으로 형상화하는 방식이다. 이를 통해서 이데올로기의 허구성과 폭력성, 그리고 현실전복에의 열망이 드러난다. 박완서가 인물들의 내면의 상처(균열)를 극복할 수 있는 방식으로서 제시한 것은 “사랑”이다. 깊은 상처(균열)를 입은 개인은 필연적으로 자신만의 단단한 껍질 속에 스스로를 가두게 되고, 이로 인해 외부세계와의 소외/단절을 겪게 된다. 이와 같은 상황에서 개인이 소외/단절로부터 벗어나 외부세계와 소통(유대)할 수 있도록 유도해 줄 수 있는 매개체가 사랑이다. 사랑은 자신과 타자 간의 경계(벽)의 와해와 끊임없는 소통(교섭)의 과정을 전제한다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 이 소설에 등장하는 인물들 간의 사랑은 소외/단절을 극복한 진정한 사랑이 아니라 사랑에 대한 환상에 머물러 있는 양상을 보여준다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 사랑에 대한 환상은 외부 세계와의 소통에의 열망에 서 비롯된 것이라는 점에서 보다 나은 현실 세계의 실현 가능성을 내포하고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 또한 이는 인간의 진정한 행복이란 이데올로기가 아닌 인간 간의 진정한 ‘사랑(소통/유대)’을 통해서만이 실현될 수 있다는 작가의 인식이 반영된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 이와 같이 박완서의 등단작 『나목 』(1970)은 현실을 ‘있는 그대로’ 드러내는 재현의 방식이 아니라, 사람들을 광기로 몰고 갔던 이데올로기적 환상과 인물들의 내면적 상처에서 기인된 “공상”, “꿈”, “환각” 등을 문학적으로 형상화하는 방식을 통해서 이데올로기에 대한 작가의 비판적 인식을 드러내고 있다. 이 점이 그녀의 6.25전쟁을 다룬 다른 소설들과 변별되는 이 소설의 미학적 특징이자, 그의 소설이 지닌 정치적 성격으로 볼 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper considered the fact that the fantasy shown in Park, Wan-Seo s initial novel『Namok 』(1970) is originated from the author s internal wound(crack) caused by irrationalities of the reality, and it implies the desire to overthrow the reality. Park, Wan-Seo s debut work, 『Namok 』(1970) is a novel based on the author s experience in the Korean War. One of the characteristics of this work differentiated from other novels dealing with the Korean War is the fantasy that is presented as ideological fantasy and aesthetic fantasy. First, the ideological fantasy is the fundamental cause for a whirlpool of the war in the Korean Peninsula. It shows the aspect of dismantling at once by deleting the description of contents and forms of two competing ideologies, and describing only horrible results(incidents) caused by the conflict between ideologies, or suggesting only results as visual images. On the other hand, the aesthetic fantasy is the method of literarily materializing daydream , dream , and hallucination originated from the characters internal wounds by the war. Through this, the fictionality and violence of ideology, and the desire for overthrow of the reality are shown. The method suggested by Park, Wan-Seo to overcome the internal wound(crack) caused by the irrational reality is the love . An individual with a deep wound(crack) inevitably locks him/herself in a hard shell, and then experiences the alienation/severance from the external world. Love is the medium that can induce this internally withdrawn individual to have communication(bond) with the external world after getting out of the alienation/severance. It is closely correlated with the fact that love premises the collapse of border(wall) and continuous communication(negotiation) between oneself and others. However, the love between characters of this novel is not the real love, but the fantasy about love. Nevertheless, as the fantasy about love is originated from the desire for real communication between people alienated/severed, it implies a hope for the better reality. It also reflects the author s realization that man s real happiness can be realized only by real love(communication/bond) between men, instead of ideologies. Like this, Park, Wan-Seo s debut work, 『Namok 』(1970) shows the author s critical perception of ideologies through the method of literarily materializing daydream , dream , and hallucination originated from characters internal wounds and ideological fantasy driving people mad, instead of the method of reproducing the reality as it is . It is the aesthetic characteristic of this novel differentiated from other novels dealing with the Korean War, and also the political nature of his novel.
