사서(史書)를 통해 본 가야․가야인식

국문 초록

본고에서는 가야의 문학적 탐구를 위한 시론적 작업으로서 우리 선조들이 가야를 어떻게 기억하고 있었는지를 사서(史書)를 통해 살펴보았다. 역사와 신화의 경계로서 가야는 신성한 왕이 다스리는 국가로 기억되었다. 특히 수로왕은 건국신화의 주인공으로 존숭되었다. 가락국의 후손인 김해 김씨와 허씨 가문은 가문의 근원으로서 가야를 인식하였다. 이들은 수로왕릉의 능묘를 보존하고 그 위상을 높이기 위해 끊임없이 노력하였다. 그 결과 조선 후기에 이르러 수로왕릉은 국가적 차원에서 제례가 이루어지기도 하였다. 그러나 가야의 건국신화적 인식에 대해 조선조의 지식인들은 부정적으로 인식하였다. 이익과 안정복, 정약용 등 실학자들은 가락국의 신화가 허탄하여 믿을 수 없다고 보았다. 대신 이들은 객관적이고 실증적인 태도로 우리 고대 국가로서 가야의 존재를 밝히고자 노력하였다. 특히 정약용은 가야의 역사가 고대사에 있어서 신라 못지 않게 중요함을 인식하였다. 이러한 가야에 대한 다양한 인식은 가야가 단순히 박제된 고대사가 아닌 오랜 시간동안 기억되었던 살아 움직이는 역사로 존재했음을 의미한다. 가야는 기억하는 이들의 입장과 목적에 따라 달리 인식되었던 것 이다. 이러한 가야인식이 문학 속에서 어떻게 형상화되었는지를 탐구하고, 나아가 현재의 시점에서 가야를 어떻게 기억해야 하는지는 앞으로의 과제가 될 것이다.

영문 초록

This study is a work on public opinion of the Gaya confederacy (伽倻, AD 42～562) for the purpose of literary research, thus is to examine how ancestors in Korea remembered Gaya through reviewing historical books. As the boundary of history and myth, Gaya was remembered as the nation ruled by the holy king. King Suro (首露王), in particular, was worshiped as the mythical hero that gave birth to the nation. He was believed to be the root of the Kim and Heo clans of Gimhae, who are the descendants of the Gaya people. They preserved the tomb of King Suro and made incessant efforts to raise its status. As a result, by the late Joseon Dynasty, national rituals were organized for the royal tomb of King Suro. However, intellectuals of the Joseon Dynasty remained negative concerning the Gaya mythology. Leading scholars of the Realist School of Confucianism (實學), such as Yi Ik(李瀷), An Jeong-bok (安鼎福) and Jeong Yak-yong (丁若鏞), saw that the Gaya myth was groundless and unreliable. Rather, they made an attempt to disclose, objectively and empirically, the existence of Gaya as Korea’s ancient kingdom. Especially Jeong Yak-yong treated the history of Gaya as much important as that of the Silla Dynasty. The existence of such various perceptions on Gaya indicates that Gaya was not merely an ancient history kept inside a glass case but a living history cherished by many for a long time. Gaya was perceived differently by those who held different stances and purposes. And, concerning how Gaya is to be remembered today, homework still remains.
