이존오 시조의 맥락 연구

국문 초록

이 논문은 이존오의 시조 <구름이>에 대한 선행 독법과 교과서적 해설의 문제점을 분석하고, 맥락 연구 방법을 통해 작품의 함의를 새로이 해석한 것이다. 교과서적 해설에 기틀을 제공한 선행 독법은 <구름이>가 정치 현실에 대한 작가의 생각을 우의적으로 표현한 작품이라고 전제하면서도 맥락 연구에서 필수적인 요소들을 충분히 고려하지 않았다. <구름이> 텍스트가 ‘주장(판단)-근거’로 짜인 텍스트라는 점, 같은 인물에 대한 비판의식을 드러내고 있으면서도 <논신돈소>와는 비판의 관점과 준거를 달리 하고 있다는 점 등에도 주목하지 않았다. 그런 까닭에 텍스트의 의미론적 통일성은 물론 그와 맞닿아 있는 맥락을 적확하게 추론하지 못하였다. 작품에 함축된 작가의 의도는 <논신돈소>와 같은 맥락에서 파악했을 뿐이다. 그런데 <논신돈소>가 유사 사례의 반복적 제시를 통해 신돈이 예법에 어긋나는 행위를 서슴지 않는 인물이라는 주장을 드러낸 데 비해 <구름이>는 군주의 은혜가 인민에게 미치는 것을 철저하게 가로막는 인물이라는 주장을 드러내고 있다. 이러한 차이는 <논신돈소>가 군-신-민의 위계적인 질서를 와해시킬 수 있는 위험한 인물임을 군주를 비롯한 신하들과 소통함으로써 신돈의 국정 수행을 반대하는 주장에 동조하도록 하려는 의도를 함축하였다면 <구름이>는 결과적으로 인민의 삶을 곤궁하게 만드는 인물임을 내세워 신돈을 중용한 당초 논리(‘구름은 무심하다’)가 실상과 맞지 않음을 드러냄으로써 신돈의 국정 수행에 반대하는 주장에 인민들까지 공감하도록 하려는 의도를 함축하였음을 말해준다. <논신돈소>에 적시된 신돈의 행위를 비판하는 준거는 관점에 따라 그 타당성에 대한 판단이 다를 수 있지만 <구름이>에 적시된 신돈의 행위를 비판하는 준거는 왕조 국가의 신민이면 누구나 그 타당성을 수용할 수 있는 것이다. 여기서 우리는 <구름이>가 이존오가 자신의 정치적 행보에 대해 좀 더 많은 독자 혹은 청자들과 소통하고 그들이 자기주장에 공감하도록 할 필요성을 절실하게 느꼈을 시점에 창작되었으리라 짐작해 볼 수 있는데, 이 연구에서 그 시점은 이존오가 장사감무로 폄직된 시기의 어느 시점으로 추론할 수 있었다. 이 연구에서 제시한 독법의 과정과 결과는 <논신돈소>와 같은 맥락에서 창작되었다고 전제하고 신돈 비판에만 초점을 맞춘 선행 독법의 모호성을 해소하고 합리적인 사고 과정을 통해 <구름이>를 이해하는 길을 보여주었다는 점에서 고려 말기 시조의 연구는 물론 그 교육적 활용에도 적잖이 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This research aims to make an alternative to former interpretations of Yi Jon-o 李存吾’s Sijo, Guruemi (Cloud is) by inferring the context of its text and interpreting the meaning of it. Most researchers have presumed that it is an allegoric text corresponding to the real political world, but none of them have analyzed the semantic coherence of the text and sought enough information of the context to interpret its meaning reasonably. Nevertheless, most results of their readings have formatted the best normal explanation of the song. So most readers or students have apprehended it in the same context as that of the historic event which Yi severely criticized Shin Don 辛旽 by submitting Nonshindonso 論辛旽疏 (A Memorial against Shin Don to the Throne) and hurling words at him in the presence. Although the censuring target of Yi’s speech and behavior in the historic event was similar to that of the song, there is an important deference between the memorial and the song, that is to say, each point and criterion of criticizing Shin is different from that of the memorial. While reading the memorial, we know that Yi was criticizing Shin for his behaviors which had run counter to the proprieties in the viewpoint of the rulers. On other hand, he described Shin as a blocker who always stopped the benevolence of the king given to the people at the song. It implies that the contexts of the two are different from each other. While reading the song text, we can meet a speaker who makes an argument against a thesis “Cloud is not greedy,” and know that it is the key point of apprehending the work to find out why the writer cited that the thesis and tried to prove it to be false. The contextual study of this research leads us to know that the thesis was accepted as the basic logic by King Gongmin 恭愍王 while he was being eager to promote Shin to a responsible post or powerful partner in innovating and reforming the old national administration system. And we can infer the context of the song like this; while Yi was demoted due to the memorial by the king and was supervising Jangsa 長沙, an area of Jeolla province and people in charge, he needed to let the people apprehend his behavior at the court in the past, and agree or sympathize with his opinion that Shin was not a well-qualified person. It would not be appealed to the people that Shin was to be blamed for violating etiquette as a vassal of the king, because such a blame was changeable according to what viewpoint the subject of a blame had. Here, we can also appreciate that Sijo including the song had been used as vehicle with which a writer of the noble class hoped to communicate with their people, native Korean, in the last period of Koryŏ Dynasty, Korea. So the process and result of this contextual study may be helpful for our students to apprehend characteristics of Sijo more explicitly and more deeply. And it is useful for them to develop their literacy or decoding competence more easily and more effectively through practicing the same or similar method of reading a literary text reasonably as that of this study.
