The Sanshoudayu Legend(a.k.a Anju and Zushio tale) was originally an oral tradition in some regions of Japan. The story had been passed down before it was written as a form of Setkyoubushi for enlightening ordinary people. After that, with the development of printing technique, the Sanshoudayu Legend gave birth to a variety of versions of cultural genres. Kibyoushi was playing a key role in such things as the one of the popular media in the later Edo Period. Sakuragawa Jihinari was one of the gesakusha(writer of Kibyoushi) who dealt with the Sanshoudayu Legend. His style was focusing on the original story, which was different from other Kibyoushi writers that adhered to some kinds of extraordinary and eccentric ways to create pop cultures. Jihinari's styles seemed to have an effect on the generations to come like modern writers, Mori Ougai. Ougai also took this legend as subject matter for his short novel. In some ways, he has in common with Sakuragawa Jihinari, for example, the affection of Anju and Zushio and people who helped the siblings. However, Ougai seemed to write this short novel for expressing his dream, that is to say, an ideal society for the modernized Japan. He excluded the old-fashioned thoughts and practices. He didn't describe Sanshoudayu as an evil and let Zushio not punish him, which was the most important part of the former versions. This makes Ougai's Shanshoudayu the most distinguishing one comparing with others. Likewise, we can find various kinds of parody or revival of Japan's old classics through its history. Focusing on the ways of variously using classics, we can also approach the various aspects of cultural media in the later Edo Period. 桜川慈悲成(1762-1833とも1839)は、江戸時代後期に活躍した戯作者である。慈悲成についての研究は今まで多く行われてこなかったが、彼が執筆したのが黄表紙ㆍ合巻ㆍ滑稽本ㆍ咄本ㆍ狂歌などのように多岐にわたっていることから考えると、これは江戸時代の文芸の中でも並々ならぬ実績である。江戸後期の様々な文化メディアとしての、特に黄表紙に表れた慈悲成の趣向とは何かを探りたいと思う。 本稿では、日本古典を活用して相違な文化変容を遂げた二人の作者、桜川慈悲成と森鴎外の「山椒大夫物」を比較ㆍ考察した。なぜ慈悲成か。黄表紙の中で、山椒大夫伝説もしくは安寿ㆍ厨子王伝説を趣向とした作家は山東京傳、唐来三和そして十返舎一九などがあるが、慈悲成のストーリーを中心にして黄表紙の特徴も生かした作風がその以降の世代に影響を与えたと推測されるからである。 また、鴎外の場合も、日本古典の素材を借りたとしても、自分なりの独特な結末を創り出したのである。それは、伝説の種をまるで実際に起った歴史事件のように書き下して、近代化をめざす自分の理想を表現したと思う。本稿で、その側面を探り、時代によって日本古典がどのように活用されたのかも注目した。
