불교에서 '공감'의 의미와 역할

국문 초록

이 글은 우리 시대의 중요한 화두 가운데 하나로 제기되는 '공감(共感)'의 문제를 불교적 관점에서 접근해본 것이다. 타인의 즐거움과 괴로움을 공감하면서 그들에게 즐거움이 늘어나고 괴로움이 줄어들기를 바라는 마음을 불교에서는 '자비(慈悲)'라고 할 수 있다. 여기서는 불교 내에서 자비의 의미와 역할에 관한 논의들을 불교가 태동한 초기에서부터 대승에 이르는 시기에 이르기까지 정리해보았다. 우선 불교의 초창기에는 깨달은 자인 붓다가 지닌 마음의 두 속성, 즉 사(捨=평정)와 비(悲=연민)가 양립할 수 있는지에 대해 이견(異見)이 있었다. 이는 붓다의 대비(大悲)가 '욕망(欲望)'과 관련되는지의 문제로서, 한편에서는 이를 부정하는 방식을 택하여 '붓다는 대비가 없다.'는 결론에 이르기도 했고, 다른 한편에서는 이를 욕망 혹은 집착과 구분되는 것으로 간주하기도 하였다. 붓다의 대비는 후대로 갈수록 불교도들에게는 논리적인 방식보다는 종교적인 관점에서 실천적으로 매우 중시되었다. 특히 자비는 대승불교의 이상적인 수행자인 '보살(菩薩)'의 두 가지 목표인 '상구보리 하화중생(上求菩提 下化衆生)' 전반에 걸쳐 큰 힘을 제공하는 역할을 담당하게 된다. 즉 자비의 마음은 이 사회의 무수한 타인들의 고통에 공감을 갖게 만들뿐 아니라, 대승의 보살이 진리를 추구하는 점에 있어서도 중요한 역할을 담당한다는 것이다. 특히 진리를 추구함에 있어 자비가 행하는 역할에 대해서는 대승의 󰡔중론(中論)󰡕, 천태종(天台宗), 화엄종(華嚴宗)의 수행법을 통해 살펴보았다. 대승불교에 있어 자비와 관련된 쟁점들은 초기와 다르게 전개된다. 즉 '공(空)의 관점에서 볼 때 존재하지 않는 중생들에게 어떻게 대비(大悲)를 일으킬 수 있는가'라는 것이 문제가 되는 것이다. 대승불교도들은 '중생이 존재하지 않는다.'는 점에 대해서는 이것이 중생을 실체적(實體的)으로 보는 견해를 타파하기 위해 제기되었음을 강조하였다. 다음으로 '대비(大悲)를 일으킨다.'는 점에 있어서는 제일의제(第一義諦)와 세속제(世俗諦)를 구분한 뒤, 세속제 차원에서는 현실의 고통을 분명히 인정할 수 있음을 강조하였다.

영문 초록

This paper is on the matter of 'Empathy (共感)' suggested as one of the important subjects in the modern times from the buddhist point of view. It can be called Compassion (慈悲) in a buddhist word, for the mind wishing others to have their happiness increased and suffering decreased as empathizing their happiness and suffering. Herein is the summary on the discussion about the meaning and role of Empathy in Buddhism from the time Buddhism started to the time of Mahayana Buddhism. First of all, in the early period of Buddhism, there were different opinions on the two kinds of mind Buddha(the enlightened one) had, the mind in a state of equilibrium (捨) and compassion (悲). This is the matter whether Buddha's great compassion is related to 'desire'. Some people come to the conclusion 'Buddha has no compassion' by denying it. On the other hand, some people consider this as a different part from desire or craving. In later times, Buddha's compassion is rather practically important from the religious point of view than the logical way to Buddhists. Especially, Compassion takes in charge of the role supplying a big power over the Bodhisattva(Ideal practitioner in the Mahayana Buddhism)'s two goals 'First attain enlightenment through cultivation, then save all beings (上求菩提 下化衆生)'. That is, the mind of compassion lets many people in this society have empathy abilities to other's suffering, but also takes in charge of an important role in the point to pursue the truth by Bodhisattva in the Mahayana Buddhism. I looked over 'Madhyamaka-kārikā (中論)' in the Mahayana Buddhism, the practices of Tientai school (天台宗), Hwayen school (華嚴宗) on the role of compassion in pursuing truth. In Mahayana Buddhism, the issues related to compassion developed differently from the early times. That is, the sentient beings do not exist from the emptiness (空). It can be the problem on how we can raise compassion to them. Buddhists in Mahayana Buddhism emphasize that the part - 'the sentient beings do not exist' - is suggested to break the point of view to see them as the ontic ones. For the next, in the part of 'Raising great compassion (大悲)', they divided it into the ultimate truth (第一義諦) and the conventional truth (世俗諦). And they emphasized that it could be possible to concede the current suffering in the dimension of the conventional truth.
