Testifying to the Affect of Margaret: A Reading of William Wordsworth's "The Ruined Cottage"

국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 장-프랑수아 리오타르의 정동 개념을 토대로 윌리엄 워즈워스의 「허물어진 오두막」을 분석하는데 있다. 이를 위해 우리는 먼저 리오타르의 이론 속에서 정동이 어떤 의미를 갖는지 정확히 이해할 필요가 있는데, 리오타르에 따르면 정동은 의미작용의 네 가지 구성요소, 즉 발신자, 수신자, 지시대상, 의미를 통해 설명될 수 없는 것이다. 의미작용으로 환원될 수 없는 것이지만 그럼에도 불구하고 정동은 '있다.' 정동은 항상 쾌 그리고/또는 고통을 통해서 자신을 드러낸다. 의미작용과 정동의 관계가 이항 대립구조에 의거해서 파악될 수 없다는 점이 중요한데, 정동은 의미작용 '내부'에 있지만 그것에 의해 적절하게 포착되거나 재현될 수 없는 '외부'이기 때문이다. 리오타르가 정동이 드러나기 위해, 다시 말해 정동이 자신을 증언하기 위해 전달과 소통의 과정이 전제되어야 한다고 주장하는 이유가 바로 여기에 있다. 「허물어진 오두막」에 대한 읽기는, 공동체 주변 외진 곳을 떠돌며 물건을 파는 행상인이 마가렛의 고통과 대면하는 과정, 좀 더 정확하게 말해 그녀의 정동에 노출되는 과정을 추적하는 것에서 시작된다. 그는 마가렛의 이야기를 들으며 그 속에 스며들어 있는 정동의 소리에 귀를 기울인다. 마가렛의 이야기 속 정동의 소리, 다시 말해 명확하게 재현되거나 이해될 수 없는 그녀의 신음이나 한숨, 중얼거림에 반복적으로 노출되는 과정에서 행상인은 이야기의 수신인으로서의 위치를 일시적으로 포기해야 하는 상황에 처하고 이로 인해 불안과 두려움에 시달린다. 하지만 그는 결코 정동의 소리에 대한 귀기울임을 멈추지 않는다. 그리고 마가렛의 정동의 소리에 대한 노출은 행상인의 입을 통해 서술자에게로 전달된다. 의미작용으로 환원될 수 없지만 그럼에도 불구하고 말하지 않을 수 없도록 만드는 정동, 즉 의미작용의 (불)가능 조건으로서의 정동은 이렇게 해서 워즈워스의 시인 정의 속에 함축된 윤리적인 차원을 드러낸다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to attempt to re-read Wordsworth's "The Ruined Cottage" on the basis of Lyotard's account of the affect. For this re-reading of "The Ruined Cottage," we first need to get the precise idea of the completely heterogeneous nature of the affect in relation to the representation. According to Lyotard, the affect should be defined as an inarticulate phrase in the sense that it negates the four poles of the articulated phrase: addressor, addressee, referent and meaning. But 'there is' an affect of pleasure and/or pain. The important thing to retain here is that the affect is nothing other than what is within and beyond the universe presented by articulate phrases. This leads Lyotard to claim that the affect manifests itself only on condition that it is infiltrated in the process of transmission which takes place in the articulate phrases. The reading of "The Ruined Cottage" begins by focusing specifically on how the Pedlar confronts the affect of Margaret. The Pedlar listens to the affectual tone within Margaret's articulated speech. At the moment when he exposes himself to the affect, he is compelled to momentarily give up the personal position of communication, but he never ceases to pay attention to the affect. The Pedlar also transmits to the narrator the story of his encounter with Margaret. The process of transmission is highly significant because the affect testifies to itself by suspending or interrupting it. The way in which the Pedlar listens to the affectual tone of Margaret's voice and transmits the tale of silent suffering can be considered as a point of entry to the ethical dimension of the Wordsworthian poet.
