브라우닝의 민중적 종교관

국문 초록

로버트 브라우닝(Robert Browning)이 1850년에 「부활절」("Easter Day")과 함께 출판한 「성탄전야」("Christmas-Eve")는 그의 작품들 중에서 드물게 기독교신앙의 문제를 정면으로 다루고 있음에도 불구하고 비평가들 사이에 주된 논의의 대상이 되지 못했다. 본 논문은 두 작품 중에서 특히 「성탄전야」를 1970년대 한국에서 비롯되어 세계적 신학이론으로 발돋움한 '민중신학'의 입장에서 재조명해보려는 시도이다. 민중신학의 창시자라고 할 수 있는 안병무와 서남동 교수 등은 당시 국내 독재정권에 항거하는 역사적 현장의 시각에서 마가복음에 나오는 오클로스(ochlos)라고 불린 예수를 추종한 무리, 그리고 이스라엘 성전 체제에 대항하는 예수 자신을 민중의 역사적 사건으로 파악하였다. 또한 그들은 구약에서 모세가 이끈탈 애굽을 통한 이스라엘 해방, 그리고 팔레스타인 지역의 최하층 유랑민 히브리인들이 연합하여 건설한 12지파 연맹 등을 민중 해방의 역사로 읽고 있다. 이러한 민중신학의 입장에 비추어 볼 때, 브라우닝의 「성탄전야」에서 극적 화자가 결국 화려한 로마 가톨릭 교회나 독일대학의 고등비평 강단이 아니라 영국시골의 하층민 교회를 선택한다는 사실은 중요한 주제적 의미를 지닌다. 영국 북부에 위치한 하층민 위주의 비국교파 교회도 물론 하나의 제도화된 종교형태이지만, 브라우닝이 묘사하는 하층 민중들의 모습은 예수 당시에 그를 추종하였던 오클로스나 구약의 히브리인 민중 집단과 연결 지어 볼 수 있다. 브라우닝은 맨체스터 출신의 중산층 화자를 내세워서, 그가 하층민 회중에 대한 계급적 편견을 차츰 불식하고, 결국 시온산 교회 공동체의 한 일원으로 개종하게 되는 과정을 극적으로 제시한다. 또한 시 중간 중간에 간헐적으로 전개되는 화자의 명상은 이러한 개종으로 나아가는 점진적 자기논증의 과정과 함께, 민중신학과 연관될 수 있는 브라우닝 자신의 인간적 사랑과 성육신의 교의를 대변한다고 볼 수 있다. 일반적으로, 비평가들은 흔히 브라우닝을 당대 영국 중산층의 보수적 가치를 대변하는 시인으로 평가해왔다. 그러나 이 시에 대한 일종의 민중신학적 접근은, 초기에 급진적 선배 시인인 셸리를 누구보다 존경하고 그의 혁명적 이상주의로부터 큰 영향을 받았던 브라우닝의 시 세계에 내재하는 급진적 민중성의 일면을 잘 드러내어 준다고 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper attempts to read Robert Browning's "Christmas Eve," published with "Easter Day" in 1850, in the perspective of Minjung Theology which was developed in Korea in the 1970's against the dictatorial regime at the time. Professors Ahn and Seo, pioneers of Minjung Theology in its early phase, claim that ochlos, a group of people who followed Jesus in his life time, and Jesus himself who opposed the dominant Jewish temple at the time, enact Minjung's historical act. Moreover, the Jewish people's exodus from Egypt led by Moses and the alliance of the twelve tribes composed by the poor wandering 'Hebrews' in the Old Testament, are also considered important historical actions which liberated Minjung from their oppression. In the perspective of Minjung Theology, it is very significant that the dramatic speaker of "Christmas Eve" chooses a small nonconformist church of low class people located at the northern England over and against the splendid Roman Catholic church and the Higher Criticism of a rationalistic German professor in his university. Although the Zion church is itself a form of organized religion, Browning's description of the poor congregation is very close to the figures of ochlos in the New Testament and the Hebrews in the Old Testament. Browning ironically represents how the dramatized speaker of the poem repents and overcomes his class prejudice toward the Minjungesque congregation finally to convert himself into a member of the church. Furthermore, the long and intermittent lyrical meditations in between the speaker's visits to three places, depict not only the gradual process of self-argument in the speaker's conversion but also the ideas of human Love and Incarnation shared both by Browning himself and Minjung Theology. Although Browning was often considered a conservative poet who represents the Victorian middle class, a reading of "Christmas Eve" in the perspective of Minjung Theology unveils a hitherto-unnoticed aspect of radical Browning who adored P. B. Shelley as a revolutionary and idealistic poet in his early phase.
