'원대한 꿈'의 비극과 서사를 통한 상처의 탈물신화

국문 초록

본고는 윌리엄 포크너의 소설 『압살롬, 압살롬!』에 반복되어 나타나는 외상적사건과 상처에 주목하여, 미국 남부 사회의 외상적 실재와 그것의 현현, 회귀, 반복이 갖는 함의를 규명할 목적으로 주인공 토마스 서트펜이 내재화한 인종주의를 라캉의 네 가지 담론 중 지배자 담론의 관점에서 고찰한다. 서트펜이 구현하고자 한 '의미로서의 주체' 즉 삶의 지표로서의 절대적 지배자란 정체성은 남부 사회의 절대적 가치의 표상이며, 완벽한 백인성 및 완전무결한 사회적 지위와 명성을 체현한 절대적 지배자로 그가 자신을 신격화해가는 과정은 스스로를 주인기표로 세우려는 시도이다. 그러나 그의 크리올계 아들 본의 귀환은 배타적 계급가치 및 인종적 편견에 기초해 세워진 상징질서에서 거부, 배제된 외상적 실재가 어떻게 원혼처럼 귀환하여 상징질서의 원활한 운영을 방해 교란하고 결국 와해시키지를 보여준다. 서트펜의 몰락은 지배자 기표에 대한 그의 병적 집착에 기인한 것으로, 주체를 화석화한 나머지 경직된 사회상징 밖의 다른 어느 의미도 인정하거나 수용할 수 없게 만드는 지배자 담론의 폐해 및 남부사회의 백인중심 가부장주의를 지탱하는 '아버지의 법'과 그 폭력적 잔혹성을 예증한다. 압살롬, 『압살롬!』의 독특한 구조와 서사적 기능과 더불어, 쇠잔한 남부와 패망한 서트펜 가문에 대한 주요 화자 퀜틴의 복잡 미묘한 애증적인 관계는 라캉이 말하는 상징질서와 외상적 실재에 대한주체의 입장 재정립이라는 과제와 가능성과 연계시켜 볼 수 있으며, 나아가 반복되는 상처와 역사적 질곡에 대한 서사적 행위로서 상징적 수단을 통한 실재에의 개입 및 변용 모색의 시도로 해석될 수 있다.

영문 초록

With a view to investigating the psychological repercussion, for the subject, of the traumatic encounter with the indifferent, castrating Other of the symbolic and the important narrative function of foregrounding and defetishizing the symptoms of open social wound, this paper traces the development of Sutpen, the mysterious, impenetrable protagonist of William Faulkner's novel Absalom, Absalom! and his tragic family saga to the so-called 'primal scene' of the novel. The kernel of Sutpen's pursuit of his "grand design" lies in the experience of his denied entrance to and rejection from a white mansion as a social underdog in the prejudice-fraught hierarchical society of the South. Sutpen's initial choice of embracing the enigmatic, threatening social packing order, rather than rejecting it, catapults him into a ruthless process of subjectification via oedipalization. Sutpen is a figure who has internalized what Jacques Lacan calls the "master discourse" characterized by a rigid obsession with the fossilized master signifier S1, which, when isolated and overvalued, forecloses any relationship with other signifiers and other pursuits of meaning. Sutpen's disowning his creole illegitimate son Charles Bon, insisting on begetting a white heir by any means, and manipulating his other son Henry into committing fratricide all symptomatically reveal his deeply embedded blind drive toward absolute power and control. Bon, as the traumatic real revealing the point of impasse in the symbolic, is incompatible with Sutpen's dynastic grand design and ultimately brings about its catastrophic fall. Sutpen's tragic "innocence" causes him to believe in the absolute power and infallibility of the master discourse of his society and aspire to elevate himself to the status of mastership without realizing that the master signifier in fact is just an empty sign with non-meaning. The simultaneous sympathy and resentment felt by Quentin, one of the major narrators, for the Sutpen's South and its legacies thus illustrate the difficulty of the unfinished, complex task of working through the lingering pains from the traumatogenic past in order to dialectize social discourses for other, more creative possibilities of inhabiting the social symbolic.
