국문 초록

전략적 관점에서 '아브라함적'(the Abrahamic)이라는 후기 데리다의 개념은, 근대를 규정짓는 다양한 양태의 모순과 근대화 과정이 몰고온 폭력적 동질화 과정의 여파 너머 오늘날 우리의 일상을 추동하는 세계화라는 현상을 낯설게 조망하도록 도와준다. 하지만 아브라함 전통에서 벗어난 비서구 경우, '아브라함적'이라는 개념과 그에 내재된 본원적 아포리아에 대한 숙고가 자신의 비서구적 유산은 물론 대안적 미래에 대한 상상의 지평 역시 담보하지 못한다는 사실에 입각해 볼 때, 해당 개념만큼 유용하고, 사유가 절실한 개념이 바로 동물성이다. 균등화ㆍ파편화된 개별 주체의 인식과 존재의 틀을 규정하는 아브라함적 전통, 그리고 타자 배타적 원리에 근거해 구성된 작금의 인본주의적 정치의 한계를 이와 같은 데리다의 비판적 관점에서 조명해보면, 2008년 여름 서울을 뒤흔들었던 촛불집회 또한 이전과는 다른 면모를 드러낸다. 그 해 광장의 열기가 궁극적으로 도달한 것은 콘테이너 장벽으로 상징되는 대의정치의 한계와 주권자라는 환영에 기반한 자기면역성의 모순적 논리의 교착상태에 다름 아니기 때문이다. 본 연구는 그와 같은 본원적인 교착상태로부터의 돌파구를 모색하는 일환으로, "위험의 순간에 찰나적으로 생성되는 기억을 붙잡아"야 한다는 발터 벤야민의 지적을 참조하여, 집단의 기억에 각인된 외상적 순간으로의 귀환이 그 한 방편이 될 수 있으리라 주장한다. 매번 새롭게 변형하는 투쟁의 장 속에 인간과 비인간 생명들이 상호 공존을 모색했던 기억의 흔적으로 되돌아가 대안적 미래의 가능성과 그 조건에 대해 새롭게 접근할 것을 제안하는 것이다.

영문 초록

Strategically deployed, Derrida's trope 'Abrahamic' forces us to radically rethink the current phenomenon of globalization beyond the multiple contradictions miring modernity and the homogenizing effects of violent uprooting it entailed worldwide. And yet, if problematization of the originary aporias constituting the Abrahamic affords little chance for those in the non-Western region in both critically affirming one's own past and forging ahead for the possibility of an alternative future, it is that other theme in the philosopher's late works termed animality (and politicization of the very idea of the animal as such as exemplified in his final seminars The Beast and the Sovereign) which, in complementary form with the former, provides the conceptual means to critically assess the present geopolitical condition of a space like East-Asia. Viewed in that respect, a much mediatized public event like the 2008 candlelight protest in Seoul reveals not only the limit and the incoherent logic of representative politics but more importantly the autoimmune effects of democratic governance anchored on the self-contradictory notion of sovereignty. How then to confront and seek a way out of this double deadlock? Taking cue from Walter Benjamin's idea of "seiz[ing] hold of a memory… at a moment of danger" in his "Theses on the Philosophy of History," the present inquiry proposes, as a paradigmatic gesture, turning toward the traumatic moments of collective past wherein textual narrativization of the ever-transforming strife between the human and non-human animal[s] not only manifests the essential tensions and conflicts grounding their uneasy coexistence but intimates the condition of possibility for their mutual evolution.
