『삼국유사』 속 꿈 화소의 활용 양상과「조신」의 위상

국문 초록

이 글은 『삼국유사』에 실린 꿈 이야기를 통해 초기 서사에서 꿈이 활용되는 동태를 확인하고, 꿈의 흐름 속에서 「조신」의 위상을 확인하고자 기획된 것이다. 『삼국유사』에는 총 33번에 걸쳐 꿈이 활용되고 있다. 종래의 연구는 꿈의 성격을 분류하는 것에 집중하였으나, 이들의 시대별 추이를 살펴본바 그 가운데 예사롭지 않은 경향성이 포착되었다. 꿈이 활용된 最古의 시점은 기원 전후로, 이 시기의 꿈은 꿈을 꾸게 된 계기가 밝혀져 있지 않다는 특징이 있었다. 이른바 이 느닷없는 꿈은 주로 서술대상의 신이성을 부각하기 위해 활용되었다. 6세기 후반에 이르면 꿈의 활용에 변화가 보인다. 꿈이 앞뒤의 사건과 계기적으로 체결되며, 서사에 긴밀하게 결구되고 있는 것이다. 이 때 꿈은 사건의 인과적 전개를 위해 활용되며 문학적 활성을 획득하고 있었다. 인과성이 부여된 꿈의 활용은 향후 지속적으로 감지되는데, 7~8세기 등장한 해석이 필요한 꿈은 이러한 경향이 강화되어 가는 추세를 반증하였다. 요컨대 꿈의 활용은 전체 서사와의 긴밀한 결구를 통해 문학적 활성을 확보한 후, 자기변태를 통해 이를 강화해가며 그 문학적 활성을 증폭하고 있었던 것이다. 9세기 중엽 이후에 지어진 것으로 보이는 「조신」은 이러한 추세의 정점에 있는 작품으로 보인다. 이 분석은 두 가지를 근거로 한다. 하나는 꿈이 대폭 확장되었다는 점이다. 이전까지의 꿈은 단편적인 정보를 제공하는 것에 불과했던 반면, 「조신」의 꿈은 서사적 세계를 허구하는 획기적인 변태를 보이고 있었다. 또 하나는 그 확장된 꿈이 작품의 주지를 전달하기 위해 고안된 전략적 장치라는 점이다. 이는 「조신」이 의도성을 지닌 창작물이라는 점에 연동하는 것으로, 遺事적 성격의 이야기에서 서사의 논리적 음영을 메우기 위한 서사적 소품으로 꿈을 동원하던 것과 대별된다. 이를 통해 「조신」은 당시까지 꿈이 활용된 이야기 가운데, 그 문학적 활성을 최대치로 끌어올린 결과물임을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This study examines movements of making use of dream motif in the early narratives through dream in 『Sam-guk-yu-sa』, and identifies the stature of 「Jo-sin」 in the dream's flow. In 『Sam-guk-yu-sa』, dream is used 33 times. Existing studies focused on classifying characters of dream, but an extraordinary tendency is found after examining chronological stream. The first recorded dream was founded before and after the birth of Christ, and the cause of dreaming was not discovered. This unexpected dream was mainly used to emphasize the sacred character. By the late 6th century, there was a change in making use of dream. Dream are causally connected to consecutive events and are constructed with narratives. In this case, dream was used to develop causal sequence and it acquired the literary vitalization. Making use of dream that had causality was shown continuously. Dream that are needed to be interpreted appeared in between 7th and 8th century and it disproved that such tendency became reinforced. In short, making use of dream ensured the literary vitalization through a close structure with the whole narrative and then it had undergone metamorphosis itself to reinforce this literary vitalization and intensified it. 「Jo-sin」 is presumed to be written after the middle of the 9th century and it is seemed to be on the peak of such tendency. This analysis is based on following two things. First, dream is expanded drastically. While dream in the past just provided fragmentary information, dream in 「Jo-sin」 showed groundbreaking metamorphosis that made a fictional world. Second, this expanded dream is strategic device designed to deliver the writer's essential message. This analysis coincides with the fact that 「Jo-sin」 is an intentional product, and it differentiates that dream is used for narrative item to cover logicality in historical story. It allows 「Jo-sin」 to identify itself that it raised the literary vitalization to the highest level among stories that used dream in those days.
