趙絅의 시에 나타난 現實認識과 비판적 視角

국문 초록

본고는 용주의 시에 나타난 병자호란을 전후한 시기의 작품을 대상으로 그의 시에 내포된 현실인식과 비판적 시각에 대해 고찰하고자 한다. 용주의 시에 나타나는 특징적인 현상은 17세기 병자호란을 전후로 한 시기의 구체적 양상과 그에 대한 인식을 표출하고 있다는 점이다. 용주는 수십여 건의 疏箚와 啓辭를 올려 정치적 모순과 사회적 폐단을 지적하고 시정할 것을 극간했다. 그러나 이러한 과정에서 야기되는 현실에서의 충돌로 인한 절망과 좌절을 시를 통해 극복하고자 했던 것이다. 그는 병자호란을 맞아 청과의 화친을 강고하게 거부했던 척화파의 주류 가운데 한 사람이다. 호란을 맞아 조선이 야만시했던 청나라에 굴복하게 됨으로써 당대의 文明意識에 충실하고 節義를 숭상했던 용주로서는 엄청난 굴욕감을 느낄 수밖에 없었을 것이다. 이러한 현상은 용주에게만 국한된 것은 아니었지만 정묘ㆍ병자의 양란은 그의 삶의 무게를 한층 무겁게 짓누르는 일대 사건이었다. 따라서 그의 시에서도 이러한 현실적 고뇌를 토로하고 형상화한 작품이 많을 수밖에 없었다. 그는 부조리한 시대 현실을 외면할 수 없어 논리정연한 상소의 형태로, 때로는 국왕의 면전에서, 그리고 초야에 물러나 있을 때는 풍자적인 수법으로 腐儒들을 준엄하게 힐책했는데, 이는 용주 자신이 지식인으로서 취해야 할 도리를 깊이 省察한 데에서 나온 것이라고 하겠다. 이것만으로도 용주는 남인을 대표하는 지식인의 범위에서 벗어나 시대의 사표가 되기에 충분했다. 그는 貪汚機辨한 행실을 미워했고 辭氣가 峻烈하여 따뜻한 날에도 서리가 내릴 정도였다고 한다. 이 같은 剛毅함은 사물을 초탈하는 淸秀한 마음가짐에서 噴出된 것이라고 여겨진다. 그러므로 위기 국면에 놓여 있던 나라를 근심하는 관료나 집단을 찾아보기 드물었던 당대 현실에서 그는 先憂後樂의 자세로 시대의 아픔과 난제를 극복하고자 고심했었다.

영문 초록

This study aims to figure out how Jo Kyung revealed his critical perspective and perception of reality through his poetry that was written around the Manchu war. The characteristic of Yong-ju's poetry is the fact that it reflects the specific reality and perception of the Joseon Dynasty around the Manchu war. Yong-ju expostulated frankly to the King against the political contradictions and social vices by sending up dozens of criticisms to the throne. But he met a fierce resistance of the real world and felt so much despair and frustration that he intended to sublimate those feelings in his poetry. He was one of the people who severely refused intimate relations with the Qing Dynasty. Joseon's surrender to the Qing Dynasty, once regarded as barbarous, must have made Yong-ju feel tremendous humiliation, because he thought much of loyalty and mental civilization. The Manchu war was a catastrophe that weighed heavily on his mind for a lifetime. As a result, his poetry was filled with his gloomy heart and mental anguish. He couldn't turn his face away from the absurdity of his time, so he admonished the king by the means of sending up criticisms to the throne, and sometimes in the king's face. In addition, when he retired to a hermitage, he strongly reprimanded scholars for having an old-fashioned and useless view, in the form of satirical poems which were derived from his deliberation on the duty of intellectuals. The fact that he never surrendered his belief can be enough to make him not only a representative of Nam-in but also a model man of the time. He hated greedy and opportunistic behaviors. His speech was so fierce that it frosted even though the sun shines. This firm conviction, I believe, originated from his high integrity which was free from worldy success and profits. He struggled to overcome the challenges and difficulties of the time with the stance of 'Public and country before private and family', which was seldom found among the corrupted and greedy public officials at that time of a national crisis.
