배경 및 목적: 쓰기는 성공적인 학교생활을 위해 중요한 능력임에도 불구하고, 쓰기연구는 상당히 부족한 상황이다. 본 연구에서는 초등학생 학생의 쓰기능력에 영향을 주는 예측변인을 살펴보고자 하였다. 방법: 이를 위해 선행연구에 근거하여 철자와 작문능력을 예측하는 유의한 변인을 각각 선별해서 검사를 구성하여 초등학교 1-5학년 학생에게 실시하였다. 철자 능력에 대한 예측변인으로는 어휘, 표기인식, 형태인식, 자음소리, 단어인지가 포함되었으며, 작문능력에 대한 예측변인으로는 어휘, 형태인식, 작동기억, 듣기이해, 읽기이해, 철자가 포함되었다. 결과: 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 어휘와 표기인식이 철자능력에 대한 유의한 변인으로 나타났다. 둘째, 형태인식과 어휘가 작문능력에 대한 유의한 변인으로 나타났다. 논의 및 결론: 언어의 투명도가 다름에도 불구하고, 영어권에서 실시된 연구결과와 상당히 비슷한 결과가 나타났다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구결과의 요약, 연구결과의 제한점 및 향후 연구에 관한 제언이 논의되었다.

영문 초록

Objectives: Despite the importance of writing for success in school, there is a limited amount of research on writing available. Developing writing skills is a demanding task because it requires linguistic awareness as well as reading skills. This study was conducted to explore the predictors of the writing abilities of elementary school students. Methods: For the purpose of this study, the criterion variable tests and predictor variable tests for spelling and composition were administered to elementary school students from first through fifth grade. Through extensive review of literature, the predictors for spelling included vocabulary, orthographic processing, morphological processing, letter sound knowledge, and word recognition. The predictors for composition included vocabulary, morphological processing, working memory, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and spelling. Then, a stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed to explore the predictive factors for spelling and composition outcomes of elementary school students. Results: Major findings of this study were summarized as follows. Firstly, vocabulary and orthographic processing were significant predictors for spelling. Secondly, morphological processing and vocabulary were significant predictors for composition. Conclusion: Despite the differences in the degrees of transparency between the Korean and English orthographies, the results of this study were comparable to those of previous studies performed in English. The summary of the results, limitations of this study, and directions for future studies were discussed.
