다문화공간에 나타난 지리적 타자성

국문 초록

다문화적ㆍ디아스포라적 상황이 강화되는 현실에서 다문화사회화가 진행되고 있으며, 다문화공간이 새롭게 형성되고 있다. 자국민이 기피하는 3D업종이나 성산업, 돌봄노동 영역에 대체된 이주노동자는 공장주변과 노래방, 클럽, 기지촌 등의 일터와 옥탑방, 쪽방, 컨테이너, 돼지축사를 개조한 방, 재개발지역 등에 모여 산다. <가리봉 연가>, <가리봉 양꼬치>의 배경인 구로구 가리봉동은 ‘옌벤거리’, ‘작은 중국’, ‘조선족 타운’이라는 명칭처럼 조선족 디아스포라 네트워크를 형성하면서 이산생활을 위한 정보를 교환하고 공유한다. 다문화공간은 낙후하고 지저분하며 위험한 곳으로 소설 결말엔 살인사건이 발생하는 우범지대, 슬럼가, 재개발지로 묘사되고 있다. <아홉 개의 푸른 쏘냐>의 배경인 이태원은 윤락과 유흥업소가 밀집되어 있으며, 외국인이 많이 모여드는 곳이다. 자신이 머무는 옥탑방과 클럽이 안식처나 휴식처가 되지 못하는 러시아 출신 이주여성인 쏘냐는 애인과 브로커에게 폭행, 금전탈취, 강제섹스를 당하며 고단하고 굴욕적인 이산생활을 한다. 성, 돈, 술, 폭력이 도사린 이곳에서 쏘냐는 성적 욕망의 대상이자 순종적이고 침묵하는 오리엔탈리즘적 아시아 여성으로서 다루기 쉬운 초국적 통제대상으로 취급된다.≪나마스테≫, <코끼리>는 공장단지인 부천과 고양시 식사동이 공간적 배경이다. 건강권과 주거권을 침해당하는 이곳 역시 허름하고 악취가 풍겨나며 지저분한 재개발지역이다. 두 편의 소설에서는 네팔과 한국, 높고 성스러운 히말라야 산과 낮은 공장단지를 이분법적으로 묘사하면서 차별적이고 편견으로 가득 찬 우리 사회를 고발한다. 이와 같이 조선족 디아스포라 공동체인 가리봉동과 외국인이 밀집되어 있는 이태원, 서울주변 공단지역의 다문화공간은 지리적 타자성을 표상하고 있다. 또한 다문화공간은 비다문화공간과의 경계긋기가 분명하며 ‘그들’만의 문화와 공간을 형성하고 있다. 약한 장소감과 장소상실을 갖는 이주자는 사회구성원(한국인) 되기와 정주에 실패한다. 쓰레기처럼 방치되어 있고 불결하며 위험하고 공포스러운 다문화공간은 우리 사회의 경계 너머에 위치함으로써 진정한 다문화사회의 도래는 요원하다.

영문 초록

The reality of reinforcing multicultural and diaspora situations has been witnessing the progress of multiculturization and the emergence of multicultural spaces. Being located in the areas of 3D jobs, sex business, and caregiving labor avoided by the Korean citizens, immigrant workers live in groups at job sites such as the surroundings of their plants, karaokes, clubs and military campside towns, dwelling arrangements such as rooftop rooms, single rooms, containers, and pig shed-turned rooms, and in redevelopment zones. Indicated by its titles including “Yanbian Street,” “Little China” and “Joseongjok Town,” Garibong-dong of Guro-gu, which is the backdrop of The Love Song of Garibong and The Lamb Skewers of Garibong, forms a network of Joseonjok diaspora and exchanges and shares information for dispersed life. Deteriorated, dirty, and dangerous multicultural spaces are described as crime-ridden districts, slums, and redevelopment zones where homicide takes place at the ends of the novels. The backdrop of Nine Blue Sonyas, Itaewon is full of prostitution and entertainment establishments and attracts a lot of foreigners. Sonya, who is an immigrant Russian lady, cannot find comfort or rest at her rooftop room and club and is subjected to violence, extortion, and forced sex by her boyfriend and broker. She leads such a hard and humiliating life. She is treated as the object of sexual desire and that of transnational control that can be easily handled as an obedient and quiet Asian woman of Orientalism at this place overwhelmed by sex, money, alcohol, and violence. Namaste and The Elephant have their backgrounds at the plant complex of Bucheon and Shiksa-dong, Goyang, respectively. Violating the health and housing rights, those places are located in shabby and dirty redevelopment zones with an odor. The two novels describe Nepal and South Korea as the high sacred Himalayas and the low plant complex, respectively, in a dual fashion, reporting the South Korean society full of discrimination and prejudice. The multicultural spaces in Garibong-dong, the community of Joseonjok diaspora, Itaewon with a dense population of foreigners, and industrial complexes near Seoul represent geographical otherness. In addition, multicultural spaces draw a line from non-multicultural spaces and create a culture and space of “their own.” Immigrants with a weak sense of place and loss of place fail to become the members of society(Koreans) and settle down. Dirty, dangerous, and fearful multicultural spaces neglected like garbage are located beyond the boundaries of the society, which makes the advent of true multicultural society a thing of distant future.
