손진태 『조선민담집』 연구

국문 초록

손진태의 『조선민담집』은 1920년대 설화를 집성한 설화집으로 연구사적 가치가 큰데, 지금까지 본격적 연구가 이뤄지지 않았다. 이에 필자는 먼저 설화 채록방식 및 수록작품에 대한 정보를 조사하고 체계적으로 정리하였다. 둘째, 설화 분류체계와 실제 분류작업을 비판적으로 검토하고, 그 위에서 새로운 분류체계를 가지고 수록 작품들을 재분류하였다. 손진태가 1930년 간행한 『조선민담집』에는 1920년부터 1930년까지 채록된 조선의 민간설화 154편이 수록되어 있다. 이 설화집은 설화 채록의 초창기인 1920년대에 조선의 설화를 가장 폭넓게, 그리고 원형 그대로 채록ㆍ집성한 설화집이라는 점에서 문학사적 의미가 크다. 손진태는 수록 작품 154편을 ‘신화ㆍ전설류’(51편), ‘민속ㆍ신앙 관련 설화’(33편), ‘우화ㆍ돈지설화ㆍ소화’(47편), ‘기타 민담’(23편)으로 분류하였다. 그런데 손진태의 분류는 신화, 전설, 설화, 우화, 돈지설화, 소화, 민담 등의 용어가 혼재되어 있어 개념의 혼란을 일으키며, 유형 간 변별성도 분명치 않다. 이에 필자는 조희웅의 설화 분류법에 의거하여 재분류하였는데, 그 결과 신이담 78편, 소담 44편, 일반담 19편, 동식물담 9편, 형식담 4편 순으로 분류되었다. 신이담에서는 창세신화, 거인설화, 대홍수설화 등 신화의 세계가 주목된다. 신화에는 창세신화를 비롯하여 인류의 탄생, 조선 산천의 유래 등을 이야기한 것이 많다. 소담은 조선인들의 발랄한 기상과 재치를 드러내는 작품이 많고, 그 외에 민중들의 해학과 풍자의 정신을 보여주는 과장담, 우행담 등이 있다. 일반담에는 전설이나 지역에 관한 기원담과 효 일화를 담은 교훈담 등이 있는데, 이에는 손진태의 민속학적 관심이 투영되어 있다. 이와 같이 손진태는 민중들의 발랄하고 대담한 상상력, 풍자와 해학의 정신, 민속의 양태 등이 나타난 설화들을 채록ㆍ집성함으로써 조선 민간설화의 민족적ㆍ문화적 성격을 드러내고자 하였다.

영문 초록

Joseon Folktales, an anthology compiled by Son Jin-tae, has significance in Korea’s literary history as it is the broadest and most accurate collection of folk tales from the Joseon era. Son Jin-tae divided the 154 folk tales in the book into four categories: ‘Myth and Legend’ (51), ‘Folk and Faith’ (33), ‘Fables and Short Tales’ (47), and ‘Miscellaneous Tales’ (23). But when Son Jin-tae’s categorization of the folk tales is examined more closely, it can be seen that terms such as myth, legend, tale, fable, short story and folktale were used almost interchangeably, which may cause confusion for readers, and the differentiation between the categories is not sufficiently clear. For this reason, I re-categorized the folktales based on the folktale classification system developed by Jo Hi-wung. As a result, the folktales were classified as Mystery Tales (78), Short Tales (44), General Tales (19), Animal and Plant Tales (9), and Formula Tales (4). The world of myth is featured in the Mystery Tales, and includes genesis myths, giant myths, and deluge myths. In the Mystery Tales, most of the myth stories are about the genesis of humankind, and the origin of the mountains and streams in Joseon. In the Short Tales, most of the stories depict the vibrant and witty spirit of the Koreans, while the others are exaggeration tales and foolish act tales. The General Tales include legends, stories of the origin of a region, and anecdotes of filial duty. Likewise, Son Jin-tae aimed to present the ethnic and cultural characteristics of Joseon folktales by collecting and recording the tales that showed the audacious imagination of the public, the spirit of humor and satire, and the aspect of folk.
