국문 초록

20세기에 동유럽에서 진행된 민족변동은 매우 복잡한 양상을 띠었다. 20세기 동안 동유럽에서 진행된 정치변동의 폭이 얼마나 컸던가하는 점은, 이 지역에 현재 19개의 국가와 러시아 영토에 속하는 자그마한 지역인 칼리닌그라드지구가 존재하는 것으로 증명된다. 1900년경 동유럽에는 오늘날과 마찬가지로 다양한 민족이 거주하고 있었다. 전체면적 2,090,800㎢에 달하는 동유럽 지역에는 19세기말에 1억1천2백7십만 명이 살았다. 제1차 세계대전 결과 정치지도가 변한 동유럽에는 1억4천1백1십만 명이 살고 있었다. 19세기말과 비교하면 2천8백4십만 명이 증가한 것이다. 인구통계학 관점에서 제2차 세계대전은 동유럽에서 전체인구수 면에서뿐만 아니라 이 지역구도에 커다란 영향을 미쳤다. 종전직후 동유럽 전체에서의 급속한 인구증가가 눈에 띈다. 인구수는 급속히 늘어나 1960년대 말에는 1억5천6백만 명을 넘어섰다. 양차대전 사이부터 1960년대 사이의 30년 기간 동안 동유럽은 전체적으로 1천5백2십만 명의 인구증가를 보이며, 민족구성에서도 대대적인 변화를 가져왔다. 이로부터 다시 40년 세월이 흘러 2000년대 동유럽의 인구수는 4천1백1십만 명으로 증가하며 전체인구수의 1/4 정도가 불어났다. 동유럽은 최근 백년간에 걸쳐 8천4백7십만 명, 즉 75%의 인구증가를 보였다. 19세기말부터 21세기 초까지 백여 년간에 걸쳐 동유럽에서 진행된 정치, 사회, 인구통계학적 변동은 매우 심했다. 국경선이 여러 번에 걸쳐 변했으며, 안정기간이 매우 짧은 격동의 시기를 보냈다. 의도적인 민족운동의 결과이던 우발적 결과이던, 동유럽에서의 민족창조 과정은 성공으로 끝나 민족국가 이념이 최종승리를 거두었다.

영문 초록

The population and ethnic changes in Eastern Europe in the 20th century showed enormously complicated phenomena. The magnitude of the political changes during the 20th century in Eastern Europe can be attested by the existence of 19 states and Kaliningrad at present. At the end of the 19th century, Eastern Europe was a very complicated region due to different ethnic nations. 112.7 million people lived in Eastern Europe, which amount a total of 2,090,800㎢. As a result of the end of World War Ⅰ, the political map of Eastern Europe changed. Approximately 140.1 million people used to live in Eastern Europe at the end of the 1920s. Compared with the population at the end of the 19th century, this is an increase of 28.4 million people. From a demographic viewpoint, World War Ⅱ has brought basic changes not only in the total population of Eastern Europe but also in regional structure. Following the war, the population of Eastern Europe saw a rapid growth to reach more than 156 million by the end of the 1960s. Between World War Ⅰ-Ⅱ and the 1960s Eastern Europe saw a population increase of 15.2 million along with a major change in the ethnic composition. In the last 40 years the population of Eastern Europe has increased by 41.1 million. For almost 100 years Eastern Europe showed an population increase of 84.7 million. Social and demographic changes in Eastern Europe between the late 19th century and the early 21st century were great. During the time, the borderlines changed several times, so it was a period of instability and turbulence. The process of national creation ended with success, whether it was the result of an intentional national movement or an accidental one, and the ideology of national state finally won the victory.
