『해동고승전』을 통해 본 각훈의 고구려 불교사 인식

국문 초록

승려 각훈이 찬술한 『해동고승전』은 『삼국사기』, 『삼국유사』와 함께 삼국시대를 다룬 현존하는 사료로서 매우 중요한 의미를 지난다. 특히 삼국에 불교를 유통시키는데 힘쓴 승려들의 전기를 다룬 덕분에 삼국의 불교사전개 양상과 함께 고려시대에 그 전개 양상을 어떻게 인식하였는지를 살필 수 있다는 점에서 그 가치는 매우 높다고 하겠다. 이 글에서는 그 가운데 『해동고승전』에 수록된 고구려 불교와 관련된 승려들의 전기를 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 각훈은 여러 사서와 승전의 내용을 저본으로 하였지만, 윤색, 절삭 등의 방법을 통해 그 내용을 변형하여 고구려 불교사를 어떻게 인식하고 있는지 드러내었음을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 각훈의 서술 태도를 통해서 그가 고구려 불교사를 어떻게 인식하였는지 알 수 있었다. 각훈은 순도에 의해 고구려가 수용됨으로써 불교가 시작되었다고 보았지만, 한편으로는 그 기저에 이전부터 형성되었던 불교와의 인연이 있었기에 가능했다고 하였다. 이렇게 기반이 되는 인연을 통해서 의연이 북제의 법상에게서 답을 구해올 수 있었고, 이를 통해 고구려에 불교가 막힘없이 유통될 수 있었던 것으로 보았다. 또한, 『해동고승전』의 고구려 불교 관련 사료는 사학사적으로도 많은 의미를 갖는다. 현존하는 사료 가운데 유일하게 삼국 불교와 관련한 승려들의 전기를 전하는 승전으로, 특히 고구려 불교와 관련한 승려의 전기가 이렇게 본격적으로 다뤄진 것은 『해동고승전』이 처음이다. 특히 각훈이 『해동고승전』을 찬술한 시기는 무인정권기에 해당한다. 때문에 그의 찬술 내용에는 당시의 현실에 대한 인식도 반영되었을 것이다. 그가 『해동고승전』에 수록한 고구려 불교 관련 승려들은 모두 나라에 불교가 유통하도록 힘쓰거나, 위험 속에서 불교를 보호하고자 했던 모범적인 인물들이었다. 아마도 각훈은 어지럽던 당시에 이들을 모범으로 삼았으면 하고자 하였던 것은 아닐까 한다.

영문 초록

Buddhist monk Gakhoon-authored 〈Haedongkoseungjeon〉 has a very important significance as the extant historical sources dealing with the period of the Three States together with ‘The Chronicles of the Three States’ and ‘The Heritage of the Three States’, especially high in its value in that we are able to look at how the people in the period of Goryeo were aware of the developmental aspects of the history of Buddhism together with the development aspects of the history of Buddhism of the Three States thanks to the Buddhist monks who dedicated themselves to propagating Buddhism to the Three States. This writing specifically took a look at the biography of the Buddhist monks involved in the Buddhism of Goguryeo included in Haedongkoseungjeon〉. As a result, this writer was able to discover that Buddhist monk Gakhoon exposed how he was aware of the history of Buddhism of Goguryeo by modifying the contents of several history books & biographies of Buddhist monks through the use of embellishment and cutting though he based his book 〈Haedongkoseungjeon〉on the contents of several history books & biographies of Buddhist monks as original copies. Through such a statement attitude of Gakhoon, this writer could know how he recognized the history of Buddhism of Goguryeo, Gakhoon seems to have a judgement that the Buddhism in Goguryeo began with Goguryeo’s reception of Buddhism through the propagation of Buddhist monk Sundo, but some were of another opinion that it was possible for Goguryeo to accept Buddhism due to the previously-formed ties with Buddhism at the bottom of the beginning of Buddhism: in addition, they thought that through the foundational ties with Buddhism, a high priest Uiyeon was able to get an answer from the Buddhist teachings in ancient Bukjae Dynasty in China, through which Buddhism could be spread without any block. Further, the historical records related to Buddhism in Goguryeo included in 〈Haedongkoseungjeon〉 have a lot of meanings even from the viewpoint of historical studies. It is the only biography of Buddhist monks delivering the life stories of the Buddhist monks involved in the Buddhism in he Three States among the extant historical records: especially. 〈Haedongkoseungjeon〉 was the first to deal with the biographies of Buddhist monks involved in Buddhism in Goguryeo in earnest like this. The period when Gakhoon wrote 〈Haedongkoseungjeon〉 belongs to the period of military subjects’ dictatorial regime in Goryeo. Therefore, there might be a reflection of the reality at that time in its contents. 〈Haedongkoseungjeon〉-included Buddhist monks related to Buddhism in Goguryeo were the exemplary figures who strove to propagate Buddhism into the country or tried to protect Buddhism from danger with one accord. This writer wonders if Gakhoon might wish the people living in such a turbulent period should follow the example of these monks.
