국문 초록

근대 역사학은 그 성립 이래 자신의 최고의 덕목을 엄정한 사실의 확립이라는 데 두었다. 그러나 가치와 사실의 이분법적 세계에서는 사실을 추구하면 할수록 가치의 세계는 멀어져 가는 것이고, 이에 따라 학문 세계에서는 의미의 문제를 추구하는 일이 무의미하게 된 것이다. 본고는 이러한 괴리의 양상을 20세기 초 독일의 종교사학자 에른스트 트뢸취(Ernst Troeltsch, 1865-1923)가 제시했던 ‘역사주의의 위기’라는 현상을 통해 검토했다. 트뢸취는 일단 자연과학과 사회과학적 접근을 거부하고 인문학적 전통 속에서 역사주의를 파악했다. 역사주의의 가정에서 볼 때, 역사는 어떠한 최종 목적을 가질 수 없으며, 역사 사건 각각은 개별적 목적과 가치를 갖는 다는 것이었다. 그런데 그의 역사주의는 자가당착적 모순에 직면하게 된다. 개별 사실의 고유성을 강조하다 보면 그 사실 각각의 고유한 가치를 인정하지 않을 수 없고 그에 따라 가치의 상대주의 내지는 가치의 해체에 이르게 되는 것이었다. 이 점이 바로 트뢸취가 그의 서구 기독교 문명에 대한 연구에서 봉착한 딜레마였다. 고전적 역사주의가 아직도 전통적인 인문학적 이상을 견지하고 있었는데 반해, 20세기의 인문학은 객관적 사실에 대한 역사화만을 학문의 목표로 하고 있다. 결국 이와 같은 역사주의의 위기 속에서 가치추구에서 사실추구라는 인문학의 변전이라는 계기를 발견하게 되는 것이고, 그것이 가장 첨예하게 표출된 예를 에른스트 트뢸취의 역사주의적 세계관의 추구에서 발견할 수 있는 것이다.

영문 초록

Since the establishment of modern historical science, its ultimate virtue had lied in finding facts. But in a world of dichotomy between value and fact, the more one pursuits the facts, the farther the values recede. Thus the pursuit of meanings in the scientific world becomes senseless. This article investigates the implications of this estrangement between fact and meaning through the conception of “the crisis of historicism” raised by a German theological historian Ernst Troeltsch(1865-1923). Troeltsch grasped the historicism in the tradition of humanities, rejecting natural and social scientific approaches to it. From the perspective of historicism, history itself can not possess any teleological goal but each historical event possess its own goal and value. By asserting the uniqueness of individual historical event, however, his historicism had to face a self-contradiction. To empathize the uniqueness of individual event would logically lead into a recognition of innate value of the event, and thus into a relativism of value or a de-construction of value system. This was the dilemma that Troeltsch had to face in his study of the Christian civilization of the West. While the classical historicism had adhered to the traditional ideal of humanities, the humanistic study of the 20th century only aims at the historicization of objective events. In the end, in the midst of this crisis of historicism, a moment of transformation of humanities from value-pursuit to fact-finding can be observed. And we find an extreme case of the contradiction in the historicist Weltanschauung of Ernst Troeltsch.
